Indesit WIDL126 – Steam Steam Steam

I have an Indesit WIDL126 thats about a month old. When the machine is drying, there is a significant amount of steam coming out of the detergent drawer, and a few droplets of water falling out of the drawer every few minutes. Is that a normal feature?

No there shouldnt be steam puffing out. (assuming you are leaving the water turned on while drying, right?) Guess you are under warranty and need to call Indesit to arrange a service visit.

Just a thought, check your hot and cold hoses are fitted the correct way around.

Hi,

Thanks for this. I will get in touch with them straight away. The hot and cold pipes are fitted properly.

This problem occurs only when the machine is in drying mode – steam comes out of the detergent drawer, and if you open the detergent drawer there is a lot of steam and water there that just puffs out.

When I got in touch with Indesit on this, they said that it is normal for steam to come out of the detergent chamber, and that it was OK for a few drops of water to come out the chamber every once in a while.

They also said that it was normal for clothes to come out a bit musty/smelly after a long dry cycle.

Are these good pieces of advice?

Looking at the hose on the parts diagram for this model that takes the water from the dispenser in to the drum, it is of the “U” design which should remain partially filled with water at all times thus stopping any steam etc from entering the dispenser on the drying cycles.

Phone them back 😉

Hi Dave,

I called them back, and described the entire situation. Essentially, the person kept reiterating that it is absolutely normal for all Indesit models to have steam coming out of the detergent chamber and for some of that steam to condense into water droplets and drop down in the front.

I tried to keep pressing the point that the chamber gets extremely hot and that I almost burnt my hand when touching the chamber area. She said that was normal! My only question is… why isn’t there ANY warning of this – i.e. they mention that the main door gets very hot, but no one talks about the detergent chamber area getting hot!

The lady on the phone said that she could send out a service engineer but that if nothing was wrong I would incur a callout charge. That just freaked me out – its something a poor graduate student like me cannot afford right now 🙂

Any words of advice?

We can perhaps test this. Next load you wish to dry, do not set to dry automatically. When the load has finished washing, run a cupful only of cold water into the drawer. This should refill the u-bend of the soap hose – then set the dryer off and see what happens.

One quick question on this Penguin45/Dave,

When I turn on the machine, and the machine is set to a full cycle that includes drying, or one that involves drying only, there are two lights flashing (not rapidly, but normal blinking) – the Door unlocked light and the bottom most light on the vertical column of LEDs (the one next to the Sun/9h sign).

Is this normal, and if not could this have something to do with my problems?

I’m not sure to be honest, it seems every new model of Indesit has a new set of codes which we don’t have access to.

This may not even be an error code as the machine would normally abort the programme where an error detected.

Another phone call to Merloni by the sound of it 🙁

“Sun” symbol is usually indicative of a dryer function. Is it off if the dryer is not set?

Yup – it goes off if the dryer is not set. I take it this is just normal then?

I’m running a load this evening and will try your suggestion. Its been exam season so I just haven’t had the time to stay home and get the chores done.

Your idea resulted in virtually no steam coming of the machine. I carried out a wash, and then put one glass of water through the detergent box a few seconds after switching on the dry cycle.

It has now been around 40 minutes and the detergent box feels cold and no steam/water droplets are coming out of the machine.

This evidently proves your hunch right – what does this mean from a service standpoint?
