Maybe.
After more than ten years at it though, not much in the way of improvement.
What’s more worrying is that other than the odd bit player products from Samsung and LG this is starting to turn up elsewhere, hell even Vestel and some of the Chinese brands are in on the act.
Beko, Electrolux, Whirlpool… many of them so far as I can see seem to be headed down this road.
Depending on whether or not they can all sell the idea to both retailers and consumers, this could become mainstream, perhaps even the norm.
It’s cheap-ish to implement, bumps the bottom line and servicing them well that’s a secondary concern perhaps at best but for some, I doubt it’s even much of a consideration. I expect as the true cost to do that is likely masked and, repairers doing this stuff at the same old rates won’t help that be changed.
Now I don’t really care about that some may say as, after all, I don’t have a stake here since I am not involved in repairs. But a lot of my friends are, some are even under contract and cannot voice any derogatory opinion for fear of punishment (something that has changed little in some quarters since I started this site) and for me, that’s wrong.
I can also tell you that there might even be some employees of certain companies that know full well all this is a complete crock but, they too can’t say anything. If there were such mythical creatures, they might even say that the repairers are being screwed over.
Some might even say that some of the concerns raised, info sold by companies to other companies for insurance purposes, lax security and so forth were just well, the norm really.
All hypothetical of course.
But if it weren’t hypothetical there’s every chance that info would leak and a strong possibility that some people might be a tad upset about all of it.

im not sure the hacker will get much” street cred ” when all his mates find out he’s been hacking washing machines .
but i agree with ken – the manufacturers are only playing lip service when it comes to security – ie we use the industry standard so that’s ok
like ken says it will be the poor agent who will be running around doing multiple recalls on issue they are not trained for apart from the half day course or if your really lucky
take 3days off unpaid loss of work etc and go do a 3 day course yehh

Actually Ally that’s raises another point ,if you are working for a manufacturer direct then you should be able to expect a certain level of support from the tech line, but what if you are doing work 2 steps removed I.e manufacturer farms work to another company who farm the work to you you could find yourself struggling.
Then again I had a machine that just wouldn’t allow the cust to operate from his tablet ,but it would from his phone , tech line couldn’t help so got fed back to factory who made a couple of suggestions ,all this time the cust is doing his nut as it’s “not doing what it should do ” we called 3 times in all and in the end John Lewis exchanged it.
We got paid once as it was regarded as a recall the other 2 times despite us carrying out what factory said.
I take the point that maybe we are drilling down in to too much detail, but the reality is that as this stuff comes in to the “cash” or extended warranty world then we are not just dealing with a straight forward fault.
Here is something else to ponder, what happens if a smart allliance is hacked and a safety device is disabled consumer uses the appliance and it catches fire.
Now I Know you could say it won’t happen, but bearing in mind that appliance s have to be tested for the worst case scenario …
