Hi guys,
I have three of these in my family, all three are suffering the same fate now. The problem is that they randomly turn themselves off. This can be 2 seconds after turning it on, it can be 20 minutes after turning it on. There is no rhyme nor reason.
I have read somewhere that it switches itself off if it over heats. This is fine, but how can it over heat in two seconds flat?
I have changed bags, filters, cleaned the head and checked for blockages but they are still the same. Miele UK are denying it is a known issue and want £75 per machine to fix. We now have almost £1000 worth of plastic and metal that is almost useless to us now!!
Any suggestions would be greatfully received.

Hi, your fault may be down to a bad connection inside the vac, , or in the handle if it has electronic control via the hose assy
Remember Power off if attempting a repair :zap:Alternatively you could try repairs@ for a local repairer who may well be able to repair it for a reasonable price.

Hi,
We have one of these that does the exact same! We have had the hose handle and the head replaced, under guarantee, several times and it still does it occassionally. Miele gave me an extra 7 years guarantee for the hassle but have now decided to replace it.
I am sorry it seems to be a wide-spread problem they seem to be doing very little about. I would be VERY annoyed!

The problem could simply be a break in the main power cable. Especially if the problem is tempermental.
The mains flex is the part that gets all the abuse, being dragged around the floor, and catching on things etc.
It’s a problem for all vacuums, Miele included. I just think that it’s worth checking out ❓

Problem I get most with these is the temp’ switch activated, if temperature at motor exceeds 97 degrees appliance shuts off until temperature drops again.
This can be due to filters clogged or hose blockage.. etc causing motor to overheat.
Another problem to look or is the already mentioned cable break (not as common).
Printed circuit boards on motor have been known to suffer from dry joints also which can cause problems. (Normally on TOC solder points) 😉
If the hose is “parked” on back of cleaner, theres a switch there that cuts out power also, these can stick sometimes too.As always with anything thats causing on/off power problems REMOVE PLUG FROM SOCKET while attempting repairs.

Hi,
Did anyone come up with reason for this particular Miele problem. I have a 716-1 which suffers from exactly these symptoms. Initially the motors speed started to fluctuate and now it does absolutely nothing except illuminate the warning light suggesting an overheated motor according to the manual.
Any ideas before I take it to the tip?? 😀

I hope people haven’t thrown away their old “broken” ones, as I think we’ve found a fix (Miele’s repair service sounded good, but at about £100, not particularly economic, and the other things they suggested were to check we were using their bags and replace filters as recommended, which we were already doing).
We were pretty convinced that our cut-out problem (which sounds like everyone else’s – the handle controls for the electrobrush would re-set to zero during use, to the extent the cleaner became unuseable) related to the connection from the flexible tube to the handset (we worked this out primarily by waggling it around, but my husband also has a gizmo which can check current, so he knew there didn’t appear to be any other breaks in the electrical connection). At the first attempt, my husband simply took apart the handle (unplugged, off course) and cleaned around the connection to the top of the flexible (corrugated) hose, where there are 3 metal bands. This didn’t work by itself, but on the second attempt he bent out slightly the little pins which are attached by wires to the handle controls (the circuit board bit) and which transfer the current from the three pins (you’ll see that the handle and hose fit together to make this contact between the “pins” and the metal bands at the top of flexible hose). It’s early days, but our problem seems to be fixed (for the moment).

I have posted elsewhere on this problem & have had to open up the handle casing several times over the past few years and re-tension/align the sprung contacts + clean ring surface and oxidised contacts that make contact with the mains supply metal hose rings. I think that this is a fundamental design issue. It is a combination of the following:
The cleaner being pulled along by the hose/handle
Wear associated with rotation of the hose within the handle
Oxidisation of the contacts & dirt on the surface of the steel hose rings & contacts.
This is no easy permanent solution to this unless there is a new design out there from Miele. Would be pleased to hear if there is.
Important: Before you take the casing apart please ensure you have unplugged the mains supply as the metal rings are immediately exposed and carry 240V. Don’t forget the screw in the plastic collar on the end of the handle. Also it can be quite fiddly to reassemble the hose in the casing as the are a number of parts inside and it is easy to pinch a wire when re-assembling.
