ParticipantHah! You thought you were going to a nice easy brush job!
No such luck.
To start with, customer explained that she had heard a tremendous noise ( think it was on spin at the time ) and had rushed out to utility to turn it off.
I checked for spider movement / bearings and could find none.
I then pulled off the plastic brush / tacho / toc ring / holder assy and found brushes to be very long and no sign of damage or sticking. Cleaned it all and replaced. Symptom still there.
Went for main board. All connections good. Checked with diagram and got believable readings on all motor connections including volts out from tacho.
Took board home for a dekko and found pcb fuse (brown plastic cylindrical type) o/c. Bingo! thought I.
6.3A of this type not available anywhere so parallelled up 2 x 3.15A. and returned.
Switched to spin. Drum began turning and I prepared to cash in 😀 .
Sadly, it turned for about 3 secs and then stopped and the rinse light flashed again 🙁 .
Fuse had not blown. Connections all tight and readings good. Tried repeatedly with same result. Except one time it turned about four spells of three seconds before stopping. 😕Now I’m off camping for a couple of weeks and the customer is prepared to wait and let me have another go when I get back. (Relative next door will cope with extra washing.) Certainly would be a shame to dump it; only about 12 years old and not heavily used.
Any ideas would be welcomed.

Sounds like tacho problem, the crash she heard may have been it going direct into full spin directly instead of ramping up slowly. Check for crack in magnet.

(Doh!) Cheers for that. Indeed it did seem to start up a little too quickly when it did come on. Presumably, electronics are not expecting such quick movement at that stage and recognise there’s a problem. Maybe it was already spinning fast when initial crack occurred to magnet and electronics were not able to effect a halt quickly enough. Will return to it in 2/3 weeks’ time. Meanwhile, do Miele do magnet as spare or is it complete motor only ?

Hi Mike
Magnet is available on it’s own. Part number 4879581.

Great news. Thanks Don. Perhaps the availability of the part is a sort of confirmation of the likelihood of this happening.

Ah! OK so now this means I do have to check the relays after all, which is what I had intended to do before the magnet was suggested. Hmm. Shall I do it tomorrow or carry on with my packing and do it when I get back? Have to see what time is left when I’ve done packing.
“sk1”, Is that 2k1? No, just looked, there’s nothing there. 6k1 I take it? Did you find a 6.3A fuse like the original?
Compliments on the pic!

ParticipantRe: Miele W828 rinse light flashing.
Checked relay 6k1 or whatever it was called, and sure enough got a reading indicating a stuck contact on one side just like all the “amateurs” were finding on theirs. Cut the top off to have a look and it certainly had had a mini-inferno in there! So this is apparently a common fault and potentially a nice little earner! Just wish I had half a dozen more like it to do. (After that, I might get a bit bored with it. 😆 )
The last post on the blog I was reading reckoned that the suspas on his had gone weak and were the underlying factor in causing the initial fault. I find that difficult to believe as the only problems I’ve ever found with suspas were due to water ingress rusting them out or supports breaking. Still, will check them over when I return. Expect conclusion in about 3 weeks. 😀

replacing an enclosed fuse with a piece of wire is not a good idea
its the same as putting a piece of wire across the fuse in a plugtopfirst of all if the fuse blows you will have molten copper over every component around
second an enclosed fuse blows quicker because it is not cooled by the surrounding air
third to make things worse you put a higher value than the originalthese fuses are easily available I think I got mine from Farnell so there is no excuse
