ParticipantA good friend asked me to repair their dishwasher.
Bosch SGV43A03GB/17 integrated dishwasher required an instantaneous water heater.
As friend I am doing this for what the parts cost me.
I turned the machine upside down to do this one rather than taking the tank off.
All seemed to go well until I tested the machine.
Machine filled OK, no sign of any leaks, happy with the way it was going then…..
“”*BANG*””
Large flash from control PCB and lights went out… :eeek:First thing to go through my my mind is “${e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}*&@… what have I done” I checked the wiring on the element, all seems OK, looking for other possible causes and then notice, lodged on the top/end of the recirc pump motor sitting against one of the terminals a 15mm olive used in plumbing!
I can only assume this has been dropped down into the side panel when originally installed, inverting the machine and then correcting it has caused it to end up perched on this small ledge of the motor, what are the chances of that?I can get a new PCB for about £92 so what would you do?
- 1) Cover the cost of the PCB as it blew when you were doing a repair.
2) Say “sorry mate, you need a new PCB as well, how the hell did you manage to drop an olive into the machine?
3) Run!”November 24, 2012 at 9:06 am #385315Martin

YOU TURNED THE MACHINE UPSIDE DOWN………?????
That in itself is the daftest thing I’ve heard (sorry) and the damage you created by doing that means you own up to your failings and stand the cost.
If you read my write up in the “Tips & Tricks” thread in trade tech, there is a step by step guide on replacing heaters and how easy it is taking the tub out.
Tipped the machine upside down……you’ve made my day…! :clown:

Hi Martin,
Glad to have made your day.
If you look through these forums there are several threads that describe replacing these heaters by turning the machine upside down. I have replaced many both ways. I accept it’s not difficult to remove the tub but in a Kitchen with restricted space completely dismantling a dishwasher, having a door laid out on a floor while you work round it and lift a tub off is not always the best option (having said that it would have been in this case).
Maybe I’ve been lucky in the past that know body else has left an olive in the base!November 24, 2012 at 9:42 am #385317spimps

I never turn upside down, pressure switch pipework is always prone to airlocks and water into the switch chamber, something that was hammered into us 40 years ago and old habits and all that.
Friends that are worth having will understand,if they dont then you know where you stand.
Check the pcb,might be a blown track you can repair.November 24, 2012 at 11:29 am #385318Twoten

This machine doesn’t have a pressure switch hose, the pressure switch is like an inverted tube on the metering tank. I always drain the sump to prevent water running back into this or onto the floor.

Well to be frank, anyone attempting such a practice need their heads examining. No less a person than P45 (the flying Penguin) came up with this brilliant solution 6 years back. It was an idiotic idea back then and it seems those that follow suit need to study the damaging effects of gravity. What goes up must come down as you have now found out the hard way. Draining the water off, now there’s a laugh for starters. The ion exchanger and salt container are full of the stuff and turn that lot upside down and I’ll leave you to guess what oriface that saline solution comes out of.
The moral of the story has to be : DON’T DO IT…..!
The new module will need configuring by the way…..have fun! 😀

I take on board what you say but, I have replaced quite a few in the past following the suggestion in these forums (maybe from about 6 years ago) without any problems. The small amount of water that has come out of the machine is caught in a container placed under the ‘water-inlet system’, I would be very surprised if the complete contents of the regeneration unit drained out. If this unit did empty it’s contents everywhere then I would have thought I’d need a pair of wellies!
I would also point out that the only reason there was a problem was not due to water which you seem to be so concerned about but due to a copper olive, not part of the machine something that nobody could have foreseen or accounted for!

If all the water has been fully drained out then you can turn it what ever way you want, yes iv seen problems with water entering pressure switches but I all ways remove the hose before tipping anyway these days, slamming the bloke for turning it on its head is just petty and TBH bitchy and I just don’t see the need for it in the forum, might make you feel better though a guess.
Some people on here really have a attitude problem, The same thing could have happened by tipping it back or side on.
The fact is a foreign object has been introduced into the machine by some one else, its bad luck it moved and the damage happened when you were working on it but its not of your doing.
Regardless if a friend or not I would not be covering it from my pocket. If I was a friend of mine I’d explain the situation and offer to again replace the part for cost or source a used or recon part. They should understand.
Just really bad luck from the seems of It

I actually agree with you martin, turning machines upside down to repair, daftest thing i have heard. They must be winding us up martin, no one would do that would they?

I’m afraid not Doc, it’s not a wind up though I cannot possibly imagine why they choose this approach and would love to know the various stages. Apart from, turn off the POWER (which our friend didn’t do at this point). Turn off the water, unhook the drain hose and inlet hose, poke it out of the kitchen units to give enough room to flip the whole kit and caboodle upside down.
Metal side panels now scraping on the kitchen floor and if they have taken them off before flipping it, the metal front frame bracket and tub edge doing a job on the floor covering. So now we have the complete ‘Poseidon adventure’ going on now and I’m at a loss as to how to proceed at this point. Especially as now I have realised I’ve not un- plugged it and there was a bang, a flash, blue smoke…..all a bit of a worry at this point……………???? 😕
Heaven knows what ‘the nomad’ would make of all this….?

Martin, you can be such an arse sometimes.
The bloke didn’t want to be made to feel small, he was after an answer to his question.

Re your post #10 Martin, the OP did not tip the machine over with the plug still in, his first post makes it clear that the fuse popped when testing afterwards.
Personally I have never, ever turned any appliance upside down to repair with the exception of small spin dryers and absorption system fridges.
I am strongly against the practice but it is obvious that others do so, mostly with apparent success.
Each to his own, lets just all calm down a little please gents.

Back to the question..
Firstly check the module to see if the damage can be repaired..
If you need to change the pcb then yes, it will need programming and on these it is pretty simple..
Either way, I would explain to your friends about the foreign object and see what they say.. I shouldn’t expect that they would be too disappointed.. Don’t forget, the dishwasher was already broken.

Always quick to jump on someone’s back but it wasn’t a million years ago he was advising someone that a dangerous gas pipe was perfectly safe and normal. Short memory eh? None of us knows it all…just some of us think we do….
