    Re: New Speed Cameras

Something on the box tonight. Hope for the future? If they get that fixed they’ll probably let you go even faster. 🙁

I think that if the van had an extra window just behind both front doors it was allowed to travel at 70mph on motorways but not dual carriageway A roads. There were some light vans that had such windows fitted as standard.

Nothing wrong with your memory Jim that’s for sure.:D

In the 60’s I was the proud owner of a Morris Minivan. And in 1965 when they introduced the 70 mph limit it didn’t include even a minivan as it was classed as a commercial vehicle and could not exceed 60 mph. So, the trend became fashionable to cut windows in the side, thus converting them into what is now classed as a ‘car derived van’ and able to enjoy the exhilarating speed of 70 mph on the M4.:rolls:

    Re: New Speed Cameras

Last Friday I had to go on a speed awareness course.
Which for those of you who dont know is a four hour workshop you get offered to do instead of taking the three points for speeding.

Well The guy taking the class said there is a force down south that is piloting training residents how to use speed guns.
Because the police dont have the resources to police it if small villages want speed cameras .
The residents send the information to the police for them to prosecute. 😥

I’m just hoping it dont catch on ,because nosey (pete the beak )over the road is sure to catch me everytime I pull out of the culdesac 😉

Freeing the living when trapped is bad enough, cutting out dead bodies is an experience you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy, mind you it does make you drive a little more slowly !

One of my best mates is a fire fighter and he’s told me some horror stories over the years I can tell you 😥

Am I the only one here who thinks our speed limits are totally fair? 30 or less in town, 60 on most 2 lane roads and 70 on multi laners has always felt just about right to me TBH.

Speed of course will only ever be a part of the circumstances involved in any crash but every MPH extra means more kenetic energy to absorb.
Once your car and whatever you’ve hit cant absorb any more you and your passengers start to 🙁

Its utterly antisocial and selfish IMO 🙁

    Re: New Speed Cameras

Madmac I agree with you regarding speed limits.Maybe should be 80 on a motorway.
The problem is I would guess over 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the driving population has gone over the speed limit at some point in there driving life.
Maybe even for only a second or two to get themselves out of trouble but at times it can happen.

Can you honestly say you have never gone over the speed limit.

In my case I was doing 35 in a 30 no excuse I know but I was driving down hill with a car tailgating me so I let my speed creep up and I was zapped.
I wouldn’t describe myself as a antisocial driver more a unlucky one .
I will from now on be keeping a closer eye on the speedo.

    Re: New Speed Cameras

Had a few fines over the years, mostly entering 30mph villages at 36-37 or so,not slowing early enough, thoughts else where, work, etc.
Age is a factor for most, tend not to tear around so much as the years mount up.
There certainly isn’t a perfect solution because we are all human.

I was an appalling driver as a 17 year old in 1964,passed my test but had no idea about driving responsbly for many years. 😳

I probably drift over the limit most days rolf! Overtaking some old dear doing 45 on an A road and ending up well over 60 to get past quickly, entering a 30 doing more than 30 instead of throttling back before reaching the limit, you know, the stuff we all do 😉

I love cars, always have done, heck my business charriot is an Astra CDTI Estate tuned to 180BHP !
I’ve never been tugged for speeding, which has probably been more about luck than jugement admittedly, but I hope I can see it as a fair cop when I inevitably am. 🙂

Frankly yes! 🙂 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time I dont speed so I guess that makes me 5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} antisocial, I admit it 🙂
In this area rolf there are no fixed speed cameras, not a one. The only thing the lead footed motorist has to fear is the easily spotted camera van popping up here and there and the occasional cop car.
In that context and without sounding like a goody two shoes I can tell you I’m pretty law abiding compared to most 😉

The by-pass round my village for example, 30mph and for good reason. Houses, school, play park all the way along its length.
Yet every single day without fail I see people doing 60 on it without a care in the world, some of these people are driving lorries, whats the stopping distance of a 40 tonner fully loaded at that speed? 🙁

I just dont understand the pleasure people get from excess speed 😕
It takes no skill whatsoever to push a throttle pedal down to the carpet :rolls:

    Re: New Speed Cameras

Nice one Madmac we can be antisocial together. 😆

If that forty tonner hit you head on you’ve got his 60 plus your 30 so 90mph plus the weight there isn’t going to be much left of you.
People who travel at those sorts of speeds want locking up.

Infact I believe its a straight ban if your caught doing 30 mph over any speed limit.
It just seems to me that these minority of nutters get away with it .

I tell you what I found interesting on that speed awareness course .Out of twenty five people ,there was nobody under the age of 30 on it. I thought it was going to be riddled with boy racers.
Infact I would guess the largest age group was 55-65 belive it or not.

    Re: New Speed Cameras

Reminded me of a call we went to,was in charge of the first appliance, confronted in a small village where, van was waiting to turn right,a 10 ton lorry with the driver on the phone hit him up the rear, tanker with 38 tons of kerosene coming the other way swerved to avoid and rolled over in someones front garden, driver was trapped by his feet and hanging upside down.
Fuel leakage ruined a couple of acres of land, van driver was in hospital for 4 moths.
Main route from Immingham refineries goes south through my patch and the number of tanker drivers who you see on the phone with a load of lpg, petrol etc in the other hand, can’t beleive them and their companies, had that kerosene been petrol or lpg it would have taken out most of the villlage, sadly it’s still on the cards.

    Re: New Speed Cameras

on the flipside, always challenge a speed claim if you feel its unfair, and financially viable.

got pulled for 96mph in a ’95 skoda felicia a few years ago. its lmax listed speed in the manual was 88… its a 1.3 with archaic technology so i told the officer straight, that cant be right – its a skoda, showed hte manual to prove its not even listed as being able to go that fast. i then asked why they hadnt pulled the guy overtaking me…

they ignored my protestations and decided to prosecute, and to give the officer on the day credit he did say “we are ruled by our guns, if it says you are over, we have to give you a ticket, if you wanna fight it go ahead, but you gotta prove you cant do 96mph…

cue phone calls to local rolling roads, cheapest was £160 for a comprehensive bhp test… and when the fine was for £80 + 3 pnts i pleaded guilty for the joy of hte ease and convenience. it sucks but sometimes the poisons in cheaper than the prevention
