    Re: Next Up On TV

One step forward, three back springs to mind.

Either way major players always win, they have too keep the balance right.

    Re: Next Up On TV

Personally I thought that the program was positive for us, which makes a change !
From the punters point of view they were made aware that as independents we are charging reasonable labour rates compared with manufacturers service, they should have said that as independents we have a pretty good chance of repairing their appliances. Work should now be planned to get manufacturers to operate like vehicle manufacturers whereby they have to make available all tech info.

    Re: Next Up On TV

I thought it was good aswell! What with all the bad news and publicity the manufacturer’s having been having lately, withholding information, over charging, trying to sell unnecessary insurance, recalls, exploding machines, fires, deaths etc, hopefully people’s perception of the independent trades will have risen!
Its a step in the right direction for us we just need to capitalise on it just like the manufacturers, sheds and insurance companies would do if the shoe was on the other foot!
I know that we are never going to beat these big companies but if the customer is educated about the practises these companies operate then the better the chance we have got

Rogue traders etc will be back in a few months probably with reports of independants ripping of old ladies.

    Re: Next Up On TV

In my opinion it was a very big step forward in various ways given the tight position the independent are in.. Even though Lee8 thinks it gives him cart blanch to go rip-off little old ladies in order to get himself onto Rouge Traders :D.

The only thing is the customers might think the independents can not repair as they do not have access to technical info.

    Re: Next Up On TV

The main omission from the program was that Graham Dixon forgot to mention that a significant number of Independents DO have access to Fault codes and Diagnostic routines and can deal with such issues just as well as the manufacturers service with the exception of maybe one manufacturer.

I would’nt worry too much about little ole ladies being ripped off as in any trade this can occur, the fact that it highlighted many practices on the part of some cannot help but be good news for us !

i didnt see the prog , but im assuming the manufacturers etc failed to mention that parts of and in some case all of their uk service networks are built upon partnerships with local independents who are fully trained and have all the access to technical info etc

    Re: Next Up On TV

    just watched it ,

it thought it would a great opportunity to champion for the local independents and explain a lot of independents are manufacturer partners are trained and have all the necessary equipment to repair and diagnose clear faults etc.

and dont forget tech forums on UKW , WTA and DASA members

i get the point that we should point out the manufacturers are withholding tech info etc , but i think this prog has just driven what little cash work is out their right into the manufacturers pockets ..

apologies if the championing for the independents was raised but was cut edited etc to make a more exciting programme

maybe its time for captain ken to get into broadcasting.

    Re: Next Up On TV

I’ll give an example that some here may understand, the majority will miss it.

A few days ago I call to a Daewoo side by side. Complaint, ice unit spilling water onto shelves.

Client rang 6 indepedents, all stated several different reasons for not wanting the call.

    No one called.

The repair took 25 seconds to diagnose, several seconds to remove 2 screws, 1 terminal block, slide out, slide in replacement assembly ,tighten 2 screws, plug in wiring and press the magic test button.

    No fault codes required.

    Just good old common sense.

No special training required to understand the weight sensor failed causing the unit to flood, freeze and jam.

See brands understand that many people can only repair there products if there shown every little fault before hand and that sends shivers down their backs, no confidence is a major player.

So takin into account the car industry example.

Try taking a newish BMW M5 to your local independent garage with an electronic fault.

There likely to bull s8it an excuse why only BMW can do the repair, unless ofcourse one person there used to work for BMW.

So like the car industry there will be independents only doin what they feel safe with no matter how much info is made available.

It may be due to lack of tech info, but for me its due to the education level and a lack of engineering understanding within our industry, I’ll use our industries current/previous wage scales as evidence to this and that this week 3 Serviceforce techs failed to understand and input the correct binary code to a non configured PCB using all the tech info required from Electrolux.

I fear brands would need to make tech info so simple they may as well give it to the customers and cut out the middleman.

    Re: Next Up On TV

i think with the american style fridge freezers there is defo an engineers fear of working on them , probably due to tech issues parts etc ,

a big factor for engineers is time – if they dont get it you will see calls bouncing about for the smallest reason ie lee8.s example of manu trained engineers failure to config a pcb .

they should be able to do it – but what stopped them – my guess more to do with pressure / time constraints not being able to stick around after the repair to do full test – explain to customer why prev engineer didn’t to this that and the next ..

hindsight, knowledge and time is great thing .

there is no excuse for engineers failing to the basics , but i think managing skill sets , repair schedules , times etc is a big factor on the outcome of a repair .

    Re: Next Up On TV

I cant say too much on here except.

They were not out on calls and they where all together in a room.

I may sound harsh, but the intellect found in this industry and i’m sure in others is ridiculous.
