    Hi All,

Have been browsing the forum but cant find an answer, so I’ll put my question & apologize if I didn’t look hard enough!

We have an Ariston A1235 approx 2 years old.

Lately been getting noisier & now deafening. When I rotate drum by hand I get a ‘clonking’ sound, as though something heavy(Not bra wires!) is moving between inner & outer drums.

Have read on the forums about drum support bracket (‘spider’?) & was wondering if this is some way the problem.ie broken & loose bit causing noise.

    Any help welcome.

What you actually have is a Hotpoint body with Indesit electronics in it.
The drum support on that machine is very strong and I have yet to see one break, I am in a very soft water area which does cause early support failure under certain usage conditions but I would say there is no chance that yours has.

There may be something in the drum, the longstanding bearing problem was more or less sorted a few years ago but you could still have a bearing failure.

You could just have a foreign body between the inner and outer drum.

I think that your machine will be covered by a five year parts guarantee so if the bearings or the motor is the cause of the noise then you would be advised to contact the Indesit Company and pay the £90.00 labour charge.

    Thanks Jim,
Sorry for late response but followed your advice & used it.
However, engineer arrived after 10 days with new drum, stripped machine & then left saying he needed a new spider. Found out today that he will be returning on March 2nd with it.
I was just wondering if a drum/bearing failure(which Ariston diagnosed more or less over ‘phone ) wouldn’t warn them that a replacement spider was needed?.
Just curious, because it seems that Ariston really dont like the 5 year parts guarentee over the extended warranty option.
Or I am I just being cynical?

    Re: Noisy Ariston

Forget Ariston, forget Hotpoint, Creda etc. Think Indesit. 😥

It sounds as though the bearing failure has damaged the drum spider, a very common occurrence.

One reason why my customers ‘ Depend On Me’ is because I would tell them over the phone that this was a possibility, I would advise a rear drum half and drum support and I would arrive with all the parts needed to complete the repair on first visit should they be needed. I would also advise them of the five year parts guarantee, needless to say, most of them know and trust me so are quite happy to pay me around £30.00 more than Indesit’s labour charge for a quick , competent, guaranteed for 12 months repair. I have on occasion gone along with all the parts mentioned, only to find that the noise was just a loose balance weight. I then charge a very modest fee to correct this fault ( less than a third of the Indecent Company charges) and take the uneeded parts back with me. I would also call within 48 hours at the outside unless the customer had very specific requirements.

If I, as a one man band, self employed engineer can offer this type of service and the manufacturers take 10 days to call then don’t have the parts to complete the repair it does make you stop and think .

    Re: Noisy Ariston

I feel for the service engineer – his only interface with the customer is when he arrives at the job. The girls (sorry girls) in the office will order a parts issue against the company fault list, but unfortunatley, they don’t actually know anything. Until the company tech actually sees the machine, it’s probably 50/50 whether there’s going to be a repair or not.

I agree wholeheartedly with those comments Chris, the instant, one to one contact with the customer is a major advantage that we indies do enjoy, however 10 days for the original call out then a promise of a return on the 2nd of March is appalling. I have a couple of WMA drum supports and rear halves in my garage right now so there is no shortage of parts.

    .

Indesit engineers should have these parts too it’s part of their van stock.

Just because something is part of the “van stock” doesn’t mean it was there. The parts may have been used earlier in the day, the centre may be TOS..who knows.
The engineer is also human, and may have been running late, have an important appointment to keep or something else just as important to him. A washing machine is hardly life or death is it.

From my many years at certain other Italian make, I know only too well that large repairs like that often were rebooked so that time could be factored in.

If the manufacturers were totally efficient, economical and tip-top where do you think the independant would operate anyway?

I hear what you say Kentish, that still doesn’t alter the fact that a 10 day delay for the first call was made even worse by another 10 day delay to complete the repair. 😥

I am not blaming the engineer in anyway whatsoever, just the poor quality of the service as a whole.

Wash your mouth out, you know you are not allowed to criticise the superb offerings from the Indecent Company :rolls: 😀

With such cheap and poor quality products, what incentive is there for the manufacturer to provide a speedy and efficient service?

All they want is for you to bin the machine and buy another from them.

    Re: Noisy Ariston

10 days is excessive what ever the engineers circumstances. If he hasnt got one he can always try a fellow engineer from same area and get one off him like alot of use engineers up here in east yorkshire do, thats if he can be bothered.
£90 labour to tighten a counterweight is I agree excessive but thats something we dont have control over unfortunately. There are im sure occasions when independent repairers charge more than manufacturers.
As an engineer who has a 1st time clearance rate of 91{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} it is frustrating to know there are engineers who dont pull their weight and wont go that extra bit of the way to fix machine without asking for an extra job slot or
without asking for it to be rebooked for another day when they have the alloted time to carry out repair.

im just glad at times we fix machines other than merloni stuff
