    Just over a year ago , a customer of mine bought a new washing machine , Zanuusi model ZWS 1420 W . Her complaint is poor wash results , as in whites and coloureds turning grey . She called out the Zanussi engineers several times under guarantee , and they checked everything and could find no fault . They allegedly fitted a new programmer , probably in desperation . The machine is now out of guarantee , and things have not improved . The water here in south Lincs is probably the hardest in the country . She uses Ariel tablets as recomended by Zanussi . When she checks the filter it is coated with grey slime . Her old machine , a 95 series hotpoint gave satisfactory results . Has anyone got any advice or comments please ?     Meanwhile, and to try answering your question, firstly the correct dosage is the primary factor. Secondly the correct programme selection relative to the type of garments being washed and thirdly care to avoid overloading.

    Whites going grey is very often a result of one or all of the above not being applied. Whites also need a bleach based powder and especially a biological one at that.

    You also need to tell the customer to :-

    seperate whites from colours when washing

    dont overload the drum

    do a water hardness test to work out the correct dosage

    do a regular 90 degree maintinance wash with a biological detergent to keep the tub crud free.

    Try

    1) doing a couple of maintenance washes immediately.
    Select 90 degree cotton and use a bio powder, and dose iaw the dosing instructions on the packet. Pat particular attention to hard water info.
    Do not put any clothing in during these two cycles.

    2) having sorted the appliance, advised your customer to do a monthly maintenance wash as descibed above to keep the appliance in good condition. No further additives are neccessary, do not use “calgon”

    3) Advise customer on seperating the washing into correct wash loads, using the correct powder, tablet, liqitab as preferred. Ariel colour should be used for colours as there is no bleach in the product and colour will be maintained throughout the garment life. Whites need bleach and that is only available in a powder/tablet form, but not in “non” bio’s.

    There is a training session in Ipswich this week, if you can get.

    Clothes that are already damaged or grey can not be recovered, but the above should sort out the future.

    Kevin. Is this correct? I don’t remember anything in the training that said there was no bleach in the non bio’s, only that the enzymes where not present.

    The customer needs to use two from three products for optium results.

    Every thing in the previous posts is correct , but I think Kevin is just a little mixed up there is so much to remember with this detergent stuff!!!

    Standard Detergent – bleach and bio (enzymes) for whites and light colours.

    Colour Detergent (or any Liquid Detergent) -bio (enzymes) but NO bleach for darker colours.

    Non Bio (NO enzymes) with Bleach for whites and anyone with skin irritation issues.

    Remember you only get what you pay for so go for a propriatory brand such as Ariel.

    The best bet is to try and attend a UKW Detergent Training Session when in your area.

    WMA36P using prog.D (40deg coloureds) and liquitabs placed at the back of the drum. Customer finds that dark garments have white specks all over them and smell of unrinsed detergent?

    I suggested she press the ‘extra rinse’ button each time and switch to powder tabs, plus do a couple of service washes in case its limescale? I went out yesterday to check it out and can’t find any faults, outer drum clean as a whistle, sump trap clear, seems to washes/rinse/spin just fine. I left before the test wash completed but she phoned last night to say the results were the same?

    Bugged if I know 😕

    Is she only using the coloured detergent Martin? I’m asking in case she’s also using something else and there’s leftovers.

    Other than that if you can get me a sample, or even a good quality photo I should be able to find out if I can’t identify the problem.

    I’ve got a call tomorrow near where she lives so I might call by and take another gander. She only uses colour liquitabs as far as I know so I might suggest she switch to powder tabs instead?

    White specks should normally be bleaching or powder residues, both of which you shouldn’t get using liquids obviously. Unless she’s using ${e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}*&^! Vanish or another additive.

    In this area the liquitabs are a real pain, our water is very soft and even one sachet can cause oversoaping, if they then use a fabric conditioner this lifts the detergent and deposits it back on the clothes like a white fluffy scum.

    what is the customer to think? her old 95 worked well her new zanussi does not! no mention is made of her using different powders in different machines to her the new machine is a poorer design giving poorer results for the same input. I would think the same if I bought functional tool and it failed to give the results expected. Seems to me that “the poor bloody infantry” i.e. us that stand in front of the customers have to justify failings that we heve no say in “why does it take so long?” “it doesnt take enough water to rinse properly” etc etc sometimes its good to take a step back and think I ONLY FIX THEM I DONT MAKE THEM
