I think size is going to be my limiting factor here, front to back I can’t excede much more than 660mm for the main body of the unit, side to side I’m a little more flexible but I doubt I’ve got more than 1000mm

Many owners of ‘American style fridge freezers’ have also had the need to stump up more cash and space for another freezer. Simply because the freezers on these beasts are far too small. Don’s idea of seperate units is well sound as likely as not you can purchase two identical units with identical capacity to save you buying another freezer to put the frozen turkey in… 😈

Re: Recommend me an American Style Fridge/freezer

Take the point about freezer space, never really had an issue with the space in the Whirlpool but then being a single bloke it usually only holds a few Pizzas and a botle of Vodka. 😉
But looking at the new models they do seem to have even less space than mine if you spec the ice/water bit. (which I no longer want)

So…..do I get the measurements and look for a more premium brand fridge and seperate freezer that just happen to stand next to each other…. 8)

    Hi

Get the measurements and post them up here and I`ll have a go for you. If you can get the overall width to 121cm that would give you loads of options.

    Worth consideration I reckon.

Also, dread the thought, should a breakdown occur at any time likely as not at least one will continue to function. 💡

Re: Recommend me an American Style Fridge/freezer

Perhaps we can clarify things a little.

An American “American Style Fridge/Freezer” (Admiral, for instance) will set you back between £1200-£1800. It will be a big, clunky, over-engineered piece of kit, which will work very well for many years and will be repairable at a surprisingly reasonable cost if it fails.

The likes of Samsung make a cheap copy. “£600 isn’t cheap”, they all cry. Yes it is, in the context of what they are copying. Use of the “Search” facility within this forum will quickly reveal the problems endemic to the Samsung machine. Similarly, you could type ‘Indesit AND electronics’ into the Washing Machine forum, or ‘Chinese AND dishwasher’ into the Dishwasher forum. The results are all pretty horrific and entirely due to people thinking that they are buying a bargain. They’re not, they’re buying a cheap under-engineered product with grossly overpriced spares to ensure that product life is shortened and repeat business is generated.

Stop and think. If you really want an American style fridge/freezer, buy an American one. You only want to spend the money once – buy badly and you may finish up paying for three.

I meant to get back on this comment…

Mike-in-Horwich wrote:When asked for a brand name that’s good the consistent reply from the engineers on this site is to “buy expensive”.

    We don’t.

People ask for a recommendation, normally what machine should I buy for £XXX that’s the best. 9 times out of 10 it’s a pile of cheap junk knocked together from little better than paper mache and cheap electronics in a Chinese sweatshop and, we know that.

So what we do is what people ask, tell them which machines are good and, which are what we consider, to be diplomatic about it, not so good.

If we recommended products that weren’t too hot then we wouldn’t be doing as we have been asked, be lying and ruining our reputation and, frankly, our reputation is valued higher than the likes of that comment or the machines that are not so clever.

What we know is that many of the appliances at the lower end of the scale in particular are not so good, have horrific spares prices when they do break, don’t perform too well and people aren’t happy with them.

You see, we see almost all the stuff that goes off in the forum but that aside, we’ve seen thousands upon thousands of service calls for warranty service and beyond over the years. We know what breaks quick and what doesn’t and we know what machines people complain about poor performance from and, consistently, it’s the ones that are a “bargain”. Sure there’s a few that break that trend, but not many.

But I must stress, we won’t lie to people and we don’t wear rose tinted spectacles, we know the vast majority of what people buy is rubbish and, in some ways it’s great as we get loads of work from it when they break.

Now, you can choose to believe all that knowledge or ignore it, it’s your call.

Well the bad news is the maximum width is 925mm due to the bloody boiler. 😥
I think with the room I have a ‘proper’ american freezer is a none starter, I haven’t got a kitchern likely to be shown on MTV Cribs. 😉
I’m a bit disappointed with the Whirlpool which cost £935 just over 5 years ago, I haven’t spent a penny on warenties or service calls in that time but I still think it should have performed better, it still does the job of keeping beer cold and Vodka colder but the clicking is becoming more annoying. I can live with the lack of ice making, ice cube trays are considerably cheaper than a service call. 😉
Might look at alternatives to the ‘American style’ but to be honest the thought of having to bend down to get the beers after years of it being at eye level doesn’t sound good.
The sad thing is, how it looks is just about as important to how it works to me, sorry. 😳

    Hi

Admiral produce a range of 900mm wide American fridge freezers. These are American by design and build. They also come in without breaking the bank 😉

Thought I was going to get lucky then, the Admiral site had my nearest stockist as a place about 1/2 a mile away, unfortunatly they don’t seem to stock the fridges. :rolls:

Just wish it didn’t have the water/ice bit, but looking at a few more detailed pictures I’d be very surprised if it isn’t made in the same factory as the Whirlpool, the controls on the front panel are identical. :rolls:
