ParticipantHi, my tenant has a Zanussi ZCG661GWC with the glass hob lid.

My understanding is the lid is solely to provide extra countertop space when the hob is not in use.
Therefore the glass lid pictured was removed during installation because it interfered with the cabinets above.
Now my managing agent is reporting that the lid has caused the gas safety device to deactivate, meaning the hobs no longer switch on. The alternatives are to buy a new oven, or reinstate the glass top which hits the cabinets above.
I find it really strange that a glass lid that’s just a work surface has anything to do with gas safety. Does this sound right?
If so is there a correct way to remove the lid and reactivate the gas safety device?
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries whatsoever.

Hi
Easy way is to remove the glass from the bar support and refit it in the upright position.
The purpose of the safety device is when the lid is closed it turns the gas off so it does not shatter and break.

That makes sense. As it is now, the silver hinge is entirely removed and the oven reassembled. There is just a small hole where the bar support used to live. I believe the glass was not easy to remove from the bar support, which is why.
Is there a way to have the oven believe that the bar support is in the upright position, without it actually being fitted? I’m assuming there is some sort of dial or hinge inside that just needs to be turned?

You cannot remove the lid and still use the appliance. If any safety device is disabled/bypassed the cooker will be classed as immediately dangerous and will need to be reported to the HSE….
If the glass lid was removed due to it hitting the units above then it should not have been installed, the regs state that units above a gas cooker/hob should be at least 650mm above the burners in all cases, the only exception to this is when the installation manual for the cooker says it can be lower.

But as r600a says above, I can remove the lid, but keep the hinge in place?

How much would you charge to put this right in TW9? I see its just a little bit outside of your normal service area. The ideal solution would be to reinstate just the hinge and remove the glass. Failing that the whole glass lid could be reinstated. Thanks!

What is the gap between the burners and the cupboards directly above?

The illustration illustrates what Johnmac was referring to.

I’m not on site but it’s very high. The glass lid just clips the rightmost cupboard by 1cm.
Thanks!

Hi
Well the cooker hood must be 760mm from the top of the burners unless both the cooker instructions AND the cooker hood instructions are of the same manufacturer.

Because the combined output of all 4 burners does not exceed 12.6kw the minimum height to cooker hood can be as low as 650mm.(see my previous post and the Zanussi User Manual page 18).
Minimum height for gas hobs with output exceeding a total of 12.6kw then the height is extended to 760mm

Martin. That depends on the manufacturer of the hood also stating the same..if not then it is 760.as the majority of hood manufacturers don’t specify output then it reverts back to BS standard as is gas regs. Unless of course you’ve done gas safe training since I was last on the course and it has changed.

True enough Bryan. The whole issue beggars belief that the lid would have been removed in the first place. An altogether reckless act. The guys “managing agent” needs to get the “installer” to reverse the cock up and refit the lid as per the correct specification and concentrate instead on facilitating the surrounding cupboard that interferes with the glass lid. Better still, buy a gas cooker without a glass lid.

I think there are more reckless acts going on in the world to concern us than a bit of glass on a British oven.
I am here for can do, positive, common sense solutions and I think that’s reasonable of me. I realize gas safety is very important, but as most ovens don’t have a lid and are equally safe, this isn’t actually a safety issue. The safety valve is attached to the hinge solely to prevent the gas coming on when the lid is closed, so the glass does not shatter with heat. As the glass is not in place now, gas safety is moot. It cannot shatter if it’s in the cupboard. It’s as safe as any other oven.
I respectfully disagree that cutting into the cupboard above, or replacing a new oven, beggar less belief than simply removing glass so the oven is like 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of other ovens. That seems very sensible given the 3 options.
Bringing things back to topic, we will reinstate the hinge and leave it pointed upwards as r600a cleverly suggested. That leaves just one issue.
Q: How do we remove the glass from the hinge as recommended here? It seemed pretty well stuck in there when the installer tried.

Addendum:
Having looked at their website, it seems the hinge may not be removable from the glass, as it’s one part “351”:

When the lid is open, it obviously pushes something that completes a circuit with the gas safety switch.
Can any clever sausage here tell me where that switch is located?
– Is it part “8”?
– Is it the central metal spring on part “348”?
– Or is it in the hinges of “348”?I haven’t lived in the UK for many years so I am working blind. As the engineer probably cannot remove the glass from the hinge as r600a recommended, I’d like to just tell the oven that the glass is “not down”. This is obviously 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} safe and realistic because if the glass is in the cupboard, then it is indeed “not down”. The sole reason for the gas safety cut off is if the glass is “down”, to prevent it shattering if the hobs turn on. There is absolutely no issue with setting the gas safety switch to believe the glass is not down, when the glass is not down, because if it is not down, then it is not down. (I hope I didn’t over-stress that point!)
Looking forward to proactive answers to how to adjust the switch as desired and as is evidently and patently safe.

Two options : smash the glass or remove hinge and short out the lid microswitch. All of the above I hasten to add I would NOT recommend. But you did ask. 🙁
