ParticipantWould anybody know of alternative cut-out/stats for Hoover/Candy t/d heater elements I look after 10 Candy dryers in student accommodation and I have to change the heater assembly as the filter/condenser unit do not get cleaned very often. The stat is a blue spot & the cut-out has 205deg on it, would the blue spot from the Hotpoint dryer do? Has anybody tried it? Is there anything else any one has used?
Thanks for looking and hopefully a favourable reply

If you can find out what temperature the stat is supposed to operate at, then you’re halfway there.
RS, Farnell and Maplin all do some stats. I have recently discovered that you can also buy stats on e-bay direct from China in qtys of 10, 20, 50 etc. at about 50p each. They look like the ones our Essex friends supply in their pattern part kits and they seem to be available in practically any temperature you can think of. (Unlike the limited ranges stocked by the quality suppliers.)(Edit:- Make sure the Chinese stats are covered by some form of guarantee of accurate performance if you decide to use them. Might be worth a phone call to trading standards if they aren’t.)
<>Might be worth experimenting with a thermocouple, a hot air gun and a circuit test lamp to find out the temperature using a new blue spot stat.<>>
I bet I’ll get my knuckles rapped for suggesting this. π

Edit: <>Only do the above if you are fully acquainted with the dangers involved in doing so and are competent to perform such tests safely and to accurately assess the results.<>October 5, 2010 at 1:11 am #332019gandh1

i dont want to pour water on a good idea but what if?
since the users abuse this appliance and if the dryer catches fire can you prove the parts you fitted did not comprimise the safety of the appliance or deviated from the manufacturers spec
from my point of veiw i would not chance it they bought the dryers in the first place so its up to them and next time you can advise the best appliace to buy that can be repaired at a reasonable cost

I hear where you’re coming from Bernie as no doubt your concern regards the potential recall rate on dryers you’ve already replace the heater unit on. But, just to reinforce what Dave has just mentioned regarding the safety issues I too would not deviate from the original and fit new Heater assemblies every time. Anything other than that is quite literally a bodge, pure and simple my friend.
Fitting genuine Hoover/Candy heaters is a nice little earner, it really is. There’s a good mark-up on trade purchasing and lots of them around going wrong all the time. All you really need to address is the guarantee you give on repairs in places such as student/multi-user accomodation to cover the potential of any recall. You can stipulate your terms of guarantee with regard to use and abuse so that if they bu&&er it up in (say) a months time and the heaters gone again then they have to stump up your rate again in full…end of!

I totally agree with what you say Martin, it is a nice little earner but the problem is that when the cut-out goes under guarantee and I have to fit a heater element, yes it is down to my terms of guarantee as you say.
With regards to what Dave said βwhat if the dryer catches fireβ I have never come across one that has. I have seen many vented dryers (the old Hoover/Hotpoint/Servis with open elements) that have got so much fluff in them that it has burnt this fluff, have you seen any catch fire?
I do take you point thought about not deviating from the original if only there was some where to buy them from. Thanks for the replies

Another thought on this issue something you said β I would not deviate from the original and fit new Heater assemblies every time.β So does this mean you do not use pattern parts and would not recommend the use of them.
Both Connections and Qualtex do a pattern part dryer element for just over Β£15 (compared to Hotpoint stat/toc kit at Β£9) I have used these for grantee repairs, using the stat and cut-out only, as fitting the complete heater can on most occasions require you to completely strip the machine down. Would you not recommend this?

I’ve done a bit of an editing job on my post above to try and ensure that the advice is only used by those who are sufficiently experienced and confident they can use it safely.

Edit: Maybe I should just say, “Anyone who takes this advice takes it at their own risk. Not mine!”
I’m tempted to do a few more experiments with known value stats to check the validity of my methodology.

Not in the least Bernie, ‘pattern equivalent’ HEATER Assys are just fine. However from my own experience the Hoover one is far better AND around the same price usually. π

You do have to wonder why some manufacturers will supply a stat kit and others require you to buy the whole lot. Maybe that’s one up for Merloni.
