ParticipantHi
Today I have bought this FF (2nd hand). I am satisfied that it was working before I transported an hour ( on its side).
I have got it home and set it up, plugged in, but no cooling effect, digital display shows 17 and 19 degrees.
I can hear occasional clicks (like the sound of a relay), I touched the compressor and that was hot, I can hear I costant hum (as I would expect).
What have I done!!??
Are these economical to repair?
Cheers

Compressor seized.normally due to lying it on the incorrect side and or not letting it stand for 24hrs before turning on.

Thanks for getting back to me. I assume it’s kaput then, or can the compressor be easily replaced?
If it’s a no, do you have any suggestions of what I could try before I give up?? (I’m guessing a big hammer won’t work!!)
Thanks again

Is there anyway of fixing a compressor, or is it a case of replacing it??

It is not a cheap or DIY job to replace a compressor, plus if you have oil in the system if the compressor is replaced you run the risk of internal blockages.

Thanks Bob, looks like I’m looking for something new then!!
I have just read in one of your replies from last year where you rated daewoo when considering low end American style FF, do you still support that??
Currys currently have the DAEWOO DRS30DSMB for £700 down from £1200, but are Daewoo appliances more reliable than their cars!!??
Would you go for this over the Samsung, Beko or LG equivalent at that price?

The Dawoo American style give very few problems.
Bosch / Siemans American are Daewoo but 4 times the price.
So they must be confident of the quality and it is not very often I get calls for the Daewoo or Bosch / Siemans and the only faults I have had have been for an internal fan motor.
If I was buying an American Fridge Freezer the Dawoo or a Beko would be my choice as if you get any problems spares are cheap and easy to get.
Don’t be fooled by some manufacturers 10 year warranty on there compressors as it is only the compressors covered and everything else is only covered for 1 or 2 years.

The Samsung shouldn’t need a new compressor, just the pipework reverse purging, easy and cheap to do. New dryer, vacuum down and regas.
As for the Daewoo, they are a cheaper version of the LG SBS, using forced air into the fridge from the freezer, good machine. As Bob said, the most common fault is the fan motor becoming intermittent and an occasional damper motor failing.

Cheers Chris
Interesting about the repair. Just for more information, the compressor clicks on, buzzes away for approx 15 seconds then clicks back off again. Do you still think it can be saved??

No if the compressor clicks on for 15 seconds it is tripping out on the thermal overload so the compressor will be seized and needs replacing.

Not true, sorry. The pressure is too high on the output side (high side) and the compressor will stall, overheat and cause the klixon to operate, which is what you may be hearing.
Once the pressure has been released, the compressor should operate normally.January 29, 2015 at 9:02 pm #424039SAMURI

If the compressor cuts out after 15 seconds on a Samsung then it will be the compressor.
If you want to double check turn of the appliance for a couple of hours then the pressure will drop in the system even if it has a blockage.
If it starts up and runs for 1 to 2 minutes before it cuts out then it has a blockage.
If it buzzes and cuts out after 15 seconds then it will be the compressor seized.
I am F gas registered and have worked on Samsung fridge freezers since they were introduced into the country so I am 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure it will be the compressor seized as it would have been working to hard if the system was blocked.

I was going on the information supplied by Q: “I am satisfied that it was working before I transported it”
Which would indicate a high side blockage, if the compressor is seized, surely it would have been seized before transportation?
I agree with your theory Bob and as you know, it will be an easy diagnosis, if we had the appliance in front of us.
If one has a regas rig, it would cost the price of a new Dryer and some gas, to prove either way.
BTW, I have spent time in the UK Samsung returns warehouse in MK and seen some of the so called write offs sent in under warranty and seen them resolved.
Good luck with it Q.

I agree you can always repair Samsungs it would be rare to have to write them off Except RSH 1 models with burnt and split liners but this could still be repaired although not Ideal.
It just comes down to if it is economical to repair them.
If the samsung was secondhand then it may not be worth spending the money repairing it.

Goodness me, didn’t mean to start a war on who has the shiniest badge!!
Right, so if I go down the repair route, what is the likely cost, is it still economical to consider?
