:eeek: Just done a quick number crunch. If the site averages 25000 hits per day which at the mo it seems to be doing, then 10, 000000 will be achieved by about the end of May. Oh well looks like the prizes are going elsewhere this time 🙄Don

KeymasterWe’ve instructed a new server is built and put on the UK backbone, it’s all I can do unless I physically go and configure it myself which I’m not able to do.
It takes sometime to do these things, especially with all that has to be set up on it and it also costs money.
Li and Trevor have done a massive amount of work optomising the site but, the fact of it is, that we’ve outgrown the current arrangements. But as I said, it takes time, as it all has to be built, installed, tested and then field tested with a mirror of UKW on it. Otherwise we’d all be bitching about the new server instead of the old one!
However I am on the site a fair old bit and the downtimes have been massively reduced of late.

KeymasterAnd yes, I know it’s been a bit slow at times today but it’s because Yahoo and Inktomi decided to pummel the servers to index UKW as well as other hosted sites.
Sorry, not a lot we can do about it unless we ban the crawlers.

This is a screen dump of another forum I frequent from a few minutes ago. Note at the top the number of members(92) and guests(355) online. more that 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of those ‘guests’ are web crawlers or bots used by search engines to find web pages to index.

KeymasterProblem is that the server that we’re on hosts a load of other sites as well, not just this one. What happens on the odd occasion, it appears, is that several dynamic sites get hammered all at the one time and it just slows the database access right down.
One of the worst offenders is the AvantGo crawlers for it.

It was an absolute mare here this morning, only managed one post and that duplicated after editing. Over an hour when access was virtually impossible. 😥

I am in the process of setting up a wireless router but am having problems, so I am viewing the site now on my new laptop, using my Zen 56K dial up account and I have not seen it load this fast for ages. It really is flying tonight.

KeymasterLi and Trevor have done a lot of optimisation on the server lately, but when some idiot runs scripts on the server’s dbase that clog it up it doesn’t help. They found out that was the problem, or a part of it at least.

Wireless routers eh? Deep joy, try gettign one to work with VOIP or remote access after you’ve forgotten the passwords. 😕
Anyway, I have noticed that the site has been moving a lot faster of late, largely due to a LOT of optimisation work being done on the server side as well as a graphics purge by me. It’s time-consuming, but it seems to have paid off.
Today the new server was finally ordered, delayed I know, but we managed to secure a pretty good deal. So expect it to get still faster as it will be located in the UK, not the US, so we should lose that slow-down as the Yanks wake up I hope.
Just as a little curiosity for you to ponder though, I changed my anti-virus and firewall, finally wrenching myself away from the clutches of Norton and switching to use Zone Alarm as a firewall and NOD32 for anti-virus. The relevence of this, well since the change all three machines have gained considerably in terms of overall speed and the site seems to fly, it loads a lot faster. Now it may not be related, but I think it may have had a bearing.

KeymasterLimited choice, I need to use SSL mail which Norton doesn’t support.
