KeymasterSince I was forced into the spotlight over this by some dude in Yorkshire whom I shall refrain from calling a tw4t I thought I’d best update everyone. 😉
The reason that there’s been a huge holdup is really pretty much threefold and, TBH, until now I had not the inclination to be 4rsed to explain it all. Today however the site was, I have to admit, desperately slow.
The first and foremost reason is that we’re spanking the hell out the current server and its available bandwidth capability. The traffic, largely due to some work that myself and Dave have been doing (it’s nice to share the blame ) has increased, ehm, quite a bit you may have noticed. On that front we’re pretty much knackered as, if we get anymore traffic, we’ll take the entire server down. In fact, we pretty much have on several occasions recently.
We have the site upgrades in play, which have introduced several delays due to testing and people changing the specs as they go, not me I hasten to add. But having to constantly change things to suit others is, shall we say, annoying.
We also have, on several occasions now, actually ran out of space on the database and on just space in general. This has caused several problems and meant that the site have had to be changed behind the scenes to accomodate the changes.
Our new home should put paid to these issues. But…
There’s always a “but”.
It also has to work in harmony with everything that’s here, including the custom coding that has been done and it all has to be tested to ensure that it all works. Which isnt’ exactly a two-minute job with the sheer volume of things that have to be checked. And, everytime it’s changed, it all has to be checked again which isn’t fun and isn’t fast.
However don’t think for a minute that I’m holding this up or that I’m not pushing on an almost daily basis to have it resolved, as I am. It solves a huge number of other problems for me as well as the site going quicker.
The good news is we’re not far away at all.
And you can all thank the subscribers for the new server too while you’re at it, as they’ve paid for the hardware.

There will be some planned downtime early on Saturday morning as the new server comes online all being well. This should be between midnight and 3am all going to plan.
It may take a few hours (up to 24 or 48 hours in some cases depending on the ISP you use) after that for the site to be visible as the DNS change propogates the net.

If anyone does have problems they could try flushing out their DNS cache.
Open a COMMAND prompt and enter ipconfig/flushdns then hit enter.
That may help some of you.

I don’t know if the DNS will be affected, it’s just a comment someone made that it may be due to the change of IP address. My plan was to have a redirect on it, but heh ho. Simple fact is that it needs doing ASAP just to cope with the traffic.
The SQL error is because the server is recieving too many HTTP requests I’m told (primarily UKW traffic) and there’s traffic being lost as the server just can’t cope with the volume of requests and so it barfs. You then get the SQL has gone away error.
The slowdown is due to this as is that “pause” you sometimes get as the traffic effectively queues and waits for it’s slot to call the database info up.
In short the server can’t cope.
Added to which the slowdown you get in the afternoon is because the server is hosted in Texas presently, so when the Yanks all wake up and login the traffic load to the datacentre goes beserk. So it slows down.
Hopefully all this will just go away shortly.

Why would that be filtered? Can’t you change the settings so that all filtered words apear as something like “buttocks”? It could be fun.
