KeymasterHola! Always nice to meet new people!
Shortly hoping to move into a new flat and need to buy a washer/dryer. Budget is, to be truthful, as little as possible but I want a machine that washes and dries very well and is reliable so will pay what I have to to achieve that. Does anyone have any brand recommendations, or even better specific models? I have been googling about but can’t find a comprehensive source of reviews, does anyone know of any?
Thanks in advance for any and all hints, tips, comments and suggestions.
Peace

It must be ‘Groundhog Day’ I reckon 😆
But to be serious for a moment (Tip) Never ask a salesman what brand of machine to buy (except Don of course 😉 ) or a barber if you think you should get your hair cut 😉
But in answer to your question…..Zanussi or better still Bosch, which model I hear you cry?…..Mid-price range is just perfect!
Happy washdays!

Ah, you found me out Martin!
Thanks for the replies though. I will check out the Zanussi and Bosch ranges. Have always fancied Miele but boy they really do charge, don’t they?
Thanks again

MartinThanks Martin 😀

Try the Zanussi ZWD1270W 1200 spin 5.5kg load or the Bosch WVF2402GB which comes with a two year guarantee subject to registration. Visit your`e friendly local retailer for good service.Don

Don is a salesmen extraordinaire* and his advise is very well founded but he also has a depth of knowledge into the workings of these gadgets, so he’s the man to listen and take note of. 😉
He also has a great sense of humour 8)

* If you have ever been lucky enough to visit Dubai, well just wonder if you will at the stretch of sand on Jumeirah Beach :?…… There was never any sand on that beach until ( you guessed it) Don sold it to them :rotfl:

Cheers to both Don and Martin.
I have seen the Zanussi 1270 for £305 online. However I have seen the Zanussi ZWD1680 for £385, which has better energy efficiency and claims to be about 20dB quiter in operation. The flat has an open kitchen/living room affair so the volume would be quite important. Do you set much faith in these measurements? £80 doesn’t seem like too bad an increase for better green credentials and a quiet life?

OK – just thought I would revisit this topic.
I am very close to moving in to my new flat (cue much applause!). Now, obviously money is pretty tight so I have set myself a budget of £400 to get this new-fangled washing thingumy. I have very little experience of white good buying, other than the, “How much? 50 notes. Done.” variety. So based on your previous advice I have looked at the models available and the Zanussi ZWD1680 and the Bosch WVF2402GB are both still in my price range. The noise difference seems to be related to it being measured on either the wash cycle or the spin cycle! D’oh, why do they bother with some of these figures sometimes?
Anyhoo, any comments regarding these 2 washer/dryer models would be much appreciated. I have read generally disparaging comments regarding Zanussi as a brand (being simply rebadged from another manufacturer?) whereas Bosch seem to have good comments regarding their German construction.
Also, I was wondering whether it is actually worth getting a washer/dryer? A friend of mine voiced the opinion that unless you pay about £700 they are all rubbish? Our machine will be used for 2 people and we will only be using the dryer in winter, so it won’t have a heavy load but I HATE having washing on view all over my flat for days on end, so even if I can get most of the moisture out that would be a big advantage in my eyes.
Also, which are the ‘aspirational’ brands in case I see a very special offer? I am guessing Miele and Siemens?
Sorry for the long post but ANY and ALL comments would be most appreciated.
Peace

You’re back again Chris and still undecided eh? 🙁
Washer dryer is the perfect answer for use in a ‘flat’ without question, for the very reasons you mentioned. Do not try to compare Zanussi with Bosch and certainly do not speak Miele as being in the same league as either. You get what you pay for and nothing more, if you can stretch your purse and buy either Bosch or Miele, thats the way to go.
Most of us can only dream of owning a Miele by the way, if you can buy one, then great. But do buy it only from your local ‘independant’ dealership and not on the “Wee Willy Winky” for goodness sake!
Your dirty washing must be stacking up by now I shouldn’t wonder?

Chris I would still go for the Bosch in the price range you have been quoting. As for washer dryers in general it is always best to have a sepereate washer machine and tumble dryer. I guess space is an issue in the flat so perhaps a compact dryer could be an option which measure only 670 high 490 wide and 480 deep so even a small cupboard would store it.
As for price well as the old saying goes you get what you pay for still applies.
Yes right assumptions if you can find a canny deal then Miele would be top of my wish list certainly and then Siemens.
Try your`e local retailer who will give the best advice and service.
Good luck with the move hope it all goes well.

KeymasterMany thanks again chaps, it is much appreciated.
Any particular reason for suggesting a local retailer? Is this for the best deal or the best service? I was actually trying to remember the last time I bought something other than food in a shop the other day and it was a LONG time ago, so I am a pretty commited etailer. I live in West London so I will try and find some independent stores. I was also considering John Lewis?

Not only will a local retailer give you excellent advice on products but also offer a delivery and installation service which is second to none. A lot of the etailers tend to give only a day at best for delivery as they are not in control of delivery services. Then just suppose machine arrives damaged it is easier to contact local dealer who will sort immediately rather than the manufacturers loads of options and hang on for half an hour listening to music. After sales service you have a small query a couple of days into use, your`e local dealer is just a phone call away and is able to offer you expert advice, better than calling the manufacturers service engineer in and possibly having to pay.
Granted you will pay a higher price but you get a lot of security for your`e well earned pounds 😀 .
Shop locally you know it makes sense 😉

KeymasterCheers Don, I will bear that in mind and have a hunt round my local area.

ParticipantChris, after going through the same decision-making process as yourself whilst replacing an ancient (but superb, untill the drum decided to rust through…) Zanussi Washcraft machine, I plumped for the ZWD1480. It’s the same basic machine as the 1680, and if your heart desires it you can wheel one out the door of Cu**ys for £380.
the old’un was extremely quiet, but this new beast is quite remarkable. I’ve got to say I’m surprised by the efficiency of the dryer too- admittedly it has a higher spin speed, but is happily drying the clothes in around the same time as our stand-alone Zanussi TD. Recommended!

KeymasterThanks DPM. I may check out a few local shops tomorrow and see what they have. Hmmm, decisions, decisions. I’ll let you know how I get on.

OK, so I am about to commit myself to buying the Bosch WVF2402GB. Sorry to disappoint you Don, but I couldn’t find a decent local dealer in W3 who could anywhere near match the price of £400 with delivery I could find on t’internet. Before I spend, what is to me, a huge amount of money I just wanted to see if anyone was aware of an amazing bargain out there I might have missed or if there was another machine worth considering at the moment? I am going to flex my plastic later today so any timely comments would be more than welcome!
