Getting local search results is good using Google’s pages, see Ally’s post for more on that, but you can’t beat good old fashioned grunt work, pure content.
As all SEO guys will tell you, content is king. Especially when it is relevant.
To that end I’ve been sprucing up the NW site to explore what can be easily or at least, relatively easily, done to get you more and better results from your website.
One thing that really bothered me was the results that some of the big companies were getting on local searches. You know, the 0800, repaircare etc. ones that seem targeted to the local areas we all cover. It niggled until I figured it out.
What they appear to have done is simply do what I’m about to show you how to do, for free. No SEO expert charging you several hundreds or thousands to do this at all and, when you see how simple it is (really!) you should be able to do this easily.
I need to do more here, I’ll show you how to funk it up later, I don’t want to melt brains.
First off you need to get a list of the postcode areas you cover together.
Then, head off here:

Get into each one you need and copy them into a spreadsheet application like Excel, Numbers, Open Office etc.
Chop out the columns and rows you don’t need.
Select the ones left that you want with the areas covered then copy them one at a time and paste in here:

This generates an HTML table so, thank God, I don’t have to show you how to build a table in HTML.
Now you have a bit of pukka HTML code that you can just pop into almost any website.
What you end up with, very basically, is what is here:

You can see examples on each of the “Area” pages of the result in its most basic form.
I am pretty damn sure this is how our funny friends are stealing search results from us all and, every click we get they don’t is a plus for me. 😉
It is worth the effort doing this, very much worth the effort. It saves you cash, generates enquiries and very likely service calls (chargeable, the type we all like and want) and adds value to your site.
All in all, there’s no downside to spending a bit of time on it.

Al you’re not thick, you just don’t get the whole internet and computer thing, which is fine. You fix machines.

Use that page on Wikipedia Ally, just click on the link to the areas you need as they are shown in the list.
I think that’s a pretty comprehensive list of them.

You need to drop that into your webpage somehow and that very much depends on the system that you use or how the site is built.
