ParticipantVery few calls this week. Hardly worth it but I have a large client base of regular clients.
There’s going to be an announcement from the Government this afternoon regarding support for the self employed although I doubt that they will consider the ongoing costs of overheads in their calculations.

ParticipantYes it is incredible how the work just stopped coming in. I’ve had a the phone ring a few times today but my voicemail message says I’m not taking anymore bookings. Considering how desperate people normally are & can’t manage a day without an appliance it is still incredible we aren’t getting more enquiries – it is going to go crazy busy when this all hopefully comes to an end…

ParticipantRegarding the payments for self employed by the Government. Are we still aloud to do any work, or nothing at all?
I’m still doing the odd emergency washing machine or oven repair for some Letting agents, but I don’t want to jeopardise any Government payment by doing this. I can’t find the answer anywhere.April 9, 2020 at 5:09 pm #467328electrofix
Moderatoras far as i know you can still work as i am as well. payment does not seem to be means tested but based on your accounts for the last 3 years. They know even if you are still working your not going to be doing much
think i have had 4 calls all day and one i ingnored when i realised it was a swiss number.

This is for Self employed.
- Unlike the employee scheme, here you CAN keep working. You also do not need to prove coronavirus impact – all who qualify get it.
When all this over I don’t know how i’ll stop with the afternoon naps!!

ParticipantAs far as I understand, any payments will be a taxable income.

ParticipantHi,
I am still trying to work not helped by Qualtex closing and Connect deliveries quoted as 3 days what about everyone else how are you finding things.
Most people seem to be buying new appliances and a lot of cowboys have resurfaced due to a lot of reputable repairers not working.
Hopefully business will return to near normal soon. Customers also getting complacent about social distancing.April 26, 2020 at 7:16 pm #467333electrofix
Moderatorvery very quiet
just order from ASWO awaiting delivery hopefully in the next 2 days. but yes getting parts is not easy. Think Qualtex closing was a bit short sighted and there are lots of engineers not going to be happy. Connect are just a silly price gang. no one beats them for rip of prices, and they expect me to buy off themDave

ParticipantI had an email from Tracey at Qualtex on Friday stating they are now partially open for business, should I have any order requirements.

ParticipantHeads up on the Government scheme for self employed…
You can now go onto the HMRC website and check whether you are eligible for the self employed grant which was announced back in March.
You also need to register for the Government Gateway scheme if you intend to claim.
I’ve been through the process and it seems straightforward but you will need some key pieces of information like Tax Ref Number / NI Number plus a form of formal ID (I had no problem using my passport.)
You cannot claim your grant until 8am on 16th May 2020.
However, it seems to me like basic common sense for us all to be registered on the system ahead of the date when the grant can be claimed simply because their website could be under considerable load once the grants go live. It should make claiming the grant much easier than having to register your details and establishing your formal ID etc on the actual day.
More info here;

Hope this helps everyone.Funny how this hasn’t received much publicity!
Stay safe,

ParticipantHeads up that you may be able to apply for the scheme from today. Just recieved this in an email from HMRC
The scheme is now open and every eligible customer has been given a date from when they can claim, between 13 and 18 May. You won’t be able to apply before your claim date, but you will be able to make a claim after that day.
Don’t worry if you can’t remember the date you were given, you can check again by logging into the online checker at any time.Jem
