Participantwasher model AWO 10561
timer model Invensys 3386AM
service number 859213215003the mcb tripped on my washer a while back
the timer board is blown and the damage seems to be in the area where the motor(7-pin) and door interlock(3-pin) connect
i inspected the motor and it seems ok although i haven’t ran it
i’m not sure how to test the door switchis it possible that the board is just faulty or is there likely to be another faulty part in the machine
thanks for any help

Hi: From your description / pictures, Quite probably your door Interlock switch has gone & blown the PCB. So you would need to at a minimum replace both of them. Your Interlock has 3 wires: 1 will be a live supply, 1 will be a Switched Live return to the machine & the other is a Neutral. Unfortunately the price of the parts may well render the machine beyond economic repair.

thanks
is it possible to deduce much from the photographs?
the door switch connects top left on pcb1
next to that is the motor

Hi: If you look at the photographs of the board overall, it looks like there are quite a few bad soldered joints over the PCB just waiting to cause problems. The thing is with the Interlock (Door switch) the connections to it take a heavy load when the machine is running. As I say your looking at board replacement & to be safe the Interlock as well, probably about £120 – £130 in parts alone.

thanks didn’t know that
i inspected the motor it seems ok-i didn’t run it
i heard they don’t give much trouble?
if i was to take a chance fitting a used timerwhat would i need to consider as a possible cause apart from door switch
i’m a sparkie so can do most of the basic stuff on machines

Hi: If you trace the print from the burned area to the edge connector it feeds, that will give you pretty good proof of what caused your problem. Once you’ve done that trace & check the wiring from the edge connector to the item it feeds, door switch or whatever & look carefully for any nicks in the insulation that could have earthed out to the metal work. Pay particular attention to where it goes under any clips or cable ties.

i’ve just picked up an identical machine for parts
the bearings were gone on it
i’ll do some transplanting today -hopefully it’ll work

Before you do, make sure you check the module numbers against each other just to make sure.

ParticipantRe: whirlpool timer blown
yes they’re the same
3386AM
and 385
i’ve transferred the loom and most of the componentsunfortunately the machine and timer are same model but drum, drain pump and wash motor are different 😥
i can check the drain pump but i’m concerned in case the original motor blew the timer?
thanks

Hi Dave: Did you trace out the wiring from the blown area to see what it feeds ?. Disconnect the motor & do a Megger test from each terminal to the motor caseing. When you say the pump & wash motor are different, do you mean they have different mountings ?

i tried to trace the tracks but tbh i couldn’t reach any conclusions
the drum, drain pump and main motor seem to be different shape and mountings
i’ll do the megger test-i wasn’t sure what tests i would need to do on it
there was no rcd trip at the time of original fault

No probs, you need to test from Each connection to Earth. If it didn’t trip your RCD you should be ok. Will look up the winding resistances for you later.
