Same as when you go down Tesco’s and arrive at the checkout with a full trolley of goods and then announce ~ ah I dont seem to have any means to pay you !

    Go Figure !

I’m sorry for this, but why? Why does ANYONE agree to work before an amount is agreed or payment method confirmed?

1… You call a Gardener to look at you lawn, he’ll….. WHAT? QUOTE you before he starts the mower!

2… You call a car valeter as you fancy a treat and want the car done properly, he’ll WHAT? QUOTE you before he gets a cloth out!

3… You call a Decorator, he’ll WHAT? QUOTE you before he gets a brush out!

    That’s all I’m going to say 😉

I always quote before i do anything she agreed to pay but stated she only had 20 pounds and would drop balance off at my shop in the morning.
I could have refused to carry on with the work at that point but as I say i know her parents and i trusted her to keep her word…… 😳

Don’t forget about neighbour’s either. One of my neighbours had a sock stuck in her machine. Got it out and only charged her 20 euro. “I’ll drop it down to you” . This is about a year ago now and every so often she says to my mother ” Oh i must drop that 20 down to Michael” :rolls: . Anyway it’s not worth the aggro to fall out with neighbours…

But it’s funny the difference in neighbours though. Her next door neighbour hadn’t money on him after doing a repair. Next day he actually walks out in front of me nearly getting knocked down to stop me to pay.

Very true I never promote my buisiness in front of family and friends, always ends up messy, I never turn down work but with friends and family I am happy to loose the work to my competitiors.

If I get a bad payer I just hound them to the gates of hell like one of those annoying customers we have been talking about.
Phone them up at night go round there every day if need be. It just turns into a matter of principle. Dont let em take the piss.
As for friends and family I think it just goes with the job. I call em
    (Jobs of love).

    Point of law though…

debt is a civil matter. BUT

You do this and you’ll end up with a criminal charge yourself..Its called harressment…Its ok for them to scruw you but you cant do it.And that is a CRIMINAL matter.

You remove the parts and leave it not working. Done it many times, funny a lot of times they find the money before it gets to that stage.

The other trick is to tell them you only work for the company you are not allowed to give credit, no money no fix. Simples!

Above all let them know how much the job is going to cost before you start fitting parts.

I think your going a litttle over the top there. Maybe it was my exaggerated phrase of hounding them to the gates of hell.
The point im making is if i’ve agreed a price for a job and the customer refuses to pay. Im not going to walk away and say ok. I will give the customer time to pay but I will remain in constant contact until there part of the transaction is complete.
I think they would have some front to not pay me and then press charges for harassment.

What would constitute harassment in these types of situations ?
Are we not allowed to ask for whats owed to us ???

    Re: Why is it….

I tell every customer on the the phone what the labour charge will be,
plus the cost of parts,Even if its an old customer, It makes them think about payment. And if they have a problem about price or payment thats their chance to say.
If i suspect they have not got the money or not left the money,
I put tool box down, look at worksheet and say, So its a Hotpoint, not emptying
And when i finished you will pay me £45 + the cost of parts, Is that right, And get a reply.
If they cannot pay, Do not start job

Just come back from a interesting one, for the last three days I have being going around to a customer at 10pm every night asking for the money for a job where I told them the cost before starting and they still said they didnt have the money.

Have you got my money yet?
Have you got my money yet?
Have you got my money yet?

Borderline harasment maybe, but making myself a right pain in the arse paid off this time!
