well here we are with the good old Yell reps ringing to say we need to sort out your YP advertising, turns out that this coming year the book is becoming smaller what Yellow Pages now call the new Compact Book ! evidently 84{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of their polled customers including advertisers wanted this, mind you we were never asked !

The new book will be smaller A4 handy size ! and the classifications will be exactly the same. So how are they making smaller I asked ? Ah well if you have say a half page advert it will still be half a page of course but the ads will be smaller, i.e scaled down i size to fit on the smaller pages, best of all they told me that anyone who has a free one line entry are now being placed at the REAR of the new book in a printed listing that probably no one wll even bother to look at !

Well I said if I was selling you a plot of land say three acres and now I have changed my mind and am going to sell you one acre but it will be for the same price would you want it ?

The prices are more or less the same although he would not say if it was the same as last year. Are we getting shafted by YP ?

I have already made up my mind that we are going to let one of our classifications go as it will save me over 2000 and by my own calcs we wont be any the worse off, the correct classification for our trade should be Domestic Appliance Repairs, sub dividing the book as they have done is nothing more that a revenue earner for them but they are going to loose out, more people seem to be coming away from YP due to the costs and last year we had an agreement that stats would be supplied by them with phone number changes to our main numbers so we could see if the ads worked. we ended up with a crude breakdown of calls for two ads sent by email that told you nothing about where the calls had come from and at what times. I rang YP and complained and it took 20 mins on the phone with them and they said thay could supply such info IF customers requested it ! well I am requesting it I told them and lets not forget it was part of our agreement with your rep that we got this. Later that day they sent a crude excel sheet via email which took over an hour to work out !

He wont be happy when he comes next week and I chew his ears of and cut his account down,

    Re: Yellow Pages 2011

Well documented in here. YELLOW PAGES TOPIC I have since come out of Yell.com as well, only difference is being £6k per year better off.

Reason it is getting thin, fewer people are wasting money on them. We had 2 arrive here, and one at home, all got thrown in the bin. On waste paper collection day I noticed a few of my neighbours had done the same.

The white pages gets the same treatment. 192.com or Google for me.

Our yellow pages was so thin and small this year they posted it through the letter box!
Never seen that before 😯 .
Just goes to show how many people are steering away from yellow pages i think their days are well and truly numbered.

We had exactly the same here Phil, I was just about to post that exactly!

We were shocked when YP arrived, there was almost nothing to it.

I have not been in the book since I moved to Bedfordshire two years ago.
I’m on Yell.com but only one listing this year.
They have out priced themselves, far too expensive for the return in revenue.

    Re: Yellow Pages 2011

we are no longer having an advert in the yellow book as i really dont believe anyone even looks at it anymore every time i need a phone number i google it
every time i get a yellow pages delivered it goes straight in the bin or if my other half gets it first it goes in the bottom of a drawer and stays there 3 years till we empty the drawer
it is a pointless and outdated item and if 2011 is not the last one then i really cannot see there being many more

Ours is due next month , have carried on advertising for now, but will scale down for next book- if there is one-
What pees me off is you never see the same rep twice for the next year.
No surprises why, they’d probably leave with earache 😆

    Re: Yellow Pages 2011

Yell is in debt to the tune of around £3.5 billion. The companys assets are currently valued at only £300m(‘ish?) and it is desperately trying to raise around £500m to stay solvent. It’s share price back in April this year was 55pence and has fallen sharply ever since. Today Yell shares are worth just 25pence.

What further proof than those facts would you need to realise that advertising with Yellow Pages and Yell.com just doesn’t work? Advertisers worldwide have turned their backs on them, too expensive, poor value for money, little return, not in touch with modern advertising trends…..R.I.P

Hasn’t this got a bit silly. This was a serious thread regards the pros & cons of Yellow pages, now degenerated into an English Lesson.

Re the subject matter. I have read with interest and can see Yellow Pages is a waste of money. However if you are relying on contract work, and in particular Connect with their outrageous rates, then perhaps it may pay to seek out potential chargeable work, and kick the robbing lot from Birmingham into touch.
