Zanussi ZTE 285 – won’t turn on

I bought a Zanussi ZTE 285 about 2.5 years ago. It was working great, but all of the sudden it doesn’t work anymore.

Normally when you turn the dial the LED lights and display turn on, but now nothing happens.

I’ve checked:
– the socket, tried the same one as the washing machine
– the door mechanism, seems fine, and normally the lights will turn on even when the door isn’t properly closed
– the power at the point of the red circle (see inside.jpg) by removing the plug, seems normal

What could be wrong?
It’s just really weird that it does nothing…

If the board springs to life then it must be something beyond that point that’s causing the problem and not a power supply issue.

So, you have a door switch, the heater, thermostats, motor, lifter pump and of course the control module itself that could all be causing a problem. You would need to look at each in turn for a problem.

Kwatt thank you for your reply.

Wouldn’t it be logical that I’d get some kind of error message on the display or a LED blink signal if it was one of those issues? It seems so weird that it does absolutely nothing.

Do you have any tips on how I can determine which part is at fault?

Depends if there’s much diagnostic stuff going on, most dryers are relatively simplistic.

What’s the PNC number and I’ll have a look and see if there is any but, it is likely to still be a case of diagnosing the problem.

There’s a whole bunch of fault codes for that dryer!

Look at the control knob to see if it is actually selecting a program, it could be at fault.

Then the door interlock or switch.

After that you get into some complex stuff.

Unfortunately the dryer does nothing: no LED lights and the display is off. Just as if it is unplugged.

(Normally when you select one of the programs a few LEDs go on and the display indicates the duration of the program. You close the door and hit the start button.)

Is there perhaps somekind of service manual or diehard repair manual for this dryer?

Yes, but we’re not allowed to republish or distribute it for fear of being sued by doing so.

Door lock switch is where I’d start looking though. 😉

I think this dryer would still turn on (LED lights + display) if the door is open, in that case it wouldn’t allow you to start.

I’ll have a look at the door switch just in case.

Any other options or things I can check?

I’ve checked the door lock switch and I don’t see any issues with it. I hear the click sound, as I am used to, when I close the door.

What can I check next?

There are two screws that hold the door switch in place, but its inside the machine, I can’t reach it.

You’d need to strip it out.

To be honest though, if you’re asking that then it may be time to get someone to look at it for you.

It’s probably easy when you have the service manual, but I would see no other way than to start breaking off plastic to get to the parts you describe.

And I’m still not convinced that it is related to the door switch. I know that’s an issue with a lot of dryers, but I don’t think it applies to mine.

Something in the electronics / on the motherboard probably fried and that part will most likely be impossible to reach as well.

Trust me, even with the manual it’s not exactly a walk in the park. If you don’t have some experience the manual is highly unlikely to help you as they don’t give blow-by-blow screw-by-screw instructions, a certain amount of knowledge is presumed.

It is possible it’s a board fault of course but, we like to eliminate the cheaper and more likely things first before jumping to conclusions.
