Well I didn’t drain it, but put that flap valve thing in…

It seemed the same except the water stop underlating because of the flap. (It was hitting the top of the second-from-right up pipe on the side – which makes sense – if no water’s coming in, then that’s the extent of the pump).

Ran it with the inlet tap toggled (just to check I wasn’t being a total muppet – but it was on, so i turned it off), and it gave that small-dieing-animal sound… Turned inlet tap on again, worked fine – dunno if that reset it somehow.
