I agree it’s less than optimal ! However… it’s the only one I have and I’m hoping that it’s just that face that’s knackered. If the bit that holds the bearing is intact I should be OK…. presuming of course I can get the bugger out ! The edge where the front seal would interface with is pretty rough too, so I would smear that with silicone before fitting the seal. If I can get the bearing out, I should be ok I think.
If it was a car with a metal hub I could get the blowtorch out to expand it, but the nylon tub makes that a tad awkward !

Well, I’ve found out why the drum wore through the heating element !
Also, I got the rear bearing out with little trouble, but the front one…. oh oh…. I clobbered hell out of it from behind with an old 8″ socket extension bar and it never moved a micron. I managed to pull the seal off the front and cleaned it up with a Dremel. I’ve now left it soaking in WD40 overnight and I’ll try it again tomorrow with a lump hammer.
I have a funny feeling that someone has clobbered the hell out of it before (not me ! – it’s a second hand machine) judging from the state of the bearing housing… tell me they’re not supposed to look like that !

Good thinking…. I’ll tackle that after breakfast. I must admit I’m a little unsure why the inner drum hit the heater. I know I had a heavy bedsheet in there at the time. I’ll clean the crud off the spider and check for cracks. If it’s not the spider then it has to be the bearings right ? The bearings however feel fine to the touch – no grinding or detectable free play.
I couldn’t have actually distorted the drum itself surely ?

OY ! 🙂
My mistake was not registering it was brass and therefore going to be softer than the large hammer I was hitting it with ! 🙂
Do you reckon I’ll be able to change the bearings with the tub in situ ? or should I stop being a lazy git and do it properly ? 🙂

I don’t suppose it’s the same as this one for the washer/dryers is it ?
… it looks the same at first glance !May 30, 2014 at 6:47 am in reply to: Drum spider ? Should I bother repairing or just replace it ? #414596aneng

I didn’t damage it taking it off – I had the right size socket and a 24″ breaker bar, I damaged it when I put it back on (ironically to protect the threads on the shaft!) and clobbered the hell out of it trying to get the pulley off ! When I couldn’t pull the pulley off, I tried whacking the shaft ‘through’. Oops. It’s the threads that are damaged, not the nut faces.
I’ve searched on the Whitegoods shop site for the part number you gave but it’s not finding anything. ? …or was that the Hotpoint part number ?
Many thanks for all your help mate – it’s very much appreciated.

I will. Incidentally, the kit you linked to doesn’t mention the WM52 in the models it will fit. Am I safe to go ahead and order this particular part ? Lastly, I don’t suppose it comes with a nut does it ? Mine is a bit mangled !

Awwww man…. I can’t believe I was bashing the crap out of it for an hour and all I had to do was unscrew it !!! :boops: :rotfl:
Thank you SO much for the tip !
Well, the spider is intact – much to my confusion. I’m guessing the reason for the free-play in the drum has to be the bearings then.
For the sake of £20, I may as well replace the lot. Especially as the thread on the spider shaft is now… er… less than optimal shall we say!

Wow… I didn’t realise you could get a spider AND a bearing kit for £20 ! Many thanks for the info mate !
As for getting the pulley off… how can I unscrew the pulley if it’s a push-fit ? …or are you saying it’s actually a screw fit ? Hmmmmmm….. I’ll be right back….

Many thanks for the advice folks. I opted to scrap it as a repair wouldn’t be cost effective. Thanks again!

Yeah, I replaced it at the same time as the brushes.

Update: I cleaned up the commutator with an extremely fine emery board and replaced the brushes. Replaced the door interlock, but the door still had the same problem closing, so I dismantled the latch mechanism in the door itself and saw that the spring that loads the latch had become dislodged from its retaining slot on one side. Pushed that back in and the door works perfectly now, so I didn’t need the interlock after all. Never mind… only £6. The machine is now running great again. Better than it ever has actually !

Yeah, I thought that too ! I got the brushes and interlock for £14 odd inc delivery (from here, obviously !).

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint WM52 motor not spinning ?
Right you are Chief. The door itself closes fine, it’s just that it often needs a bash to get the ‘door locked’ light to come on. Would that likely be just the interlock bit (£6) ? (i.e. http://tinyurl.com/bp7exnx )

Fair enoughski. Just took the motor off for a better look. The brushes are on their last legs wear-wise, but they are making contact with the commutator. Admittedly there’s only perhaps another 1-2mm left in them before they break contact, but measuring across the brushes consistently gives about 2ohms, so there is continuity across the armature coils.
Update: I removed the lot, incl the controller and checked for any obvious signs of kaput-tedness, cleaned the commutator, put it all back together and – it works. 😕 Must be the brushes after all. I’ll change them this week, and whilst I’m at it, I’ll get a new door switch wotsit. I’m getting tired of hearing the Mrs slamming the door shut to get it to work 🙂
