Thanks for your quick response Penguin. Fortunately the machine is now back in operation. Although water supply was switched on I decided to disconnect inlet pipe at both ends and reattach. Not sure what happened or if flooky but problem seemed to be solved. Wondering if it could have had air lock in pipe as the previous evening had installed new washing machine. Anyway thanks again.

Thanks to all concerned. Have now got a new set of carbon brushes and the machine is spppppining!!!!
Will list details in case anybody else has same problems
