    Thanks. I got it apart and was surprised to see that the shaft looks in good condition. However, I think the rear bearing is stuck onto the shaft, and I’m not sure what will get it off.

    I’m reluctant to lever it as the spyder could get damaged, and pliers aren’t shifting it either. Any ideas what I can try?? It would be unfortunate to get this far and not be able to finish the job, even if it doesn’t look in great condition. If I could get a couple of years out of this machine it would be worth doing at this point.

    Thanks chaps. I have nothing to lose. I only got round to it now as I am moving soon and need to decide whether to take it with me.

    The Washing Machine manual is a great book, and after reading it I am kind of looking forward to doing the job. As for whether I will recognise more serious damage, I doubt it, but I’ll have fun trying.

    Thanks, but you don’t say why that is. As I understand it the roaring noise is an issue with the bearings and they can be replaced.
