Thanks penguin
You are of course correct! The ‘ntc’ or white terminals read about 5k but the grey ‘element’ terminals are reading open circuit at room temp. Maybe there lies the problem. I stupidly swapped these wires around (before reading your reply) so that the element wires were on the ntc terminals
<<>>There was a burning smell and the house circuit breaker tripped. So I let it all calm down then returned the wires to where they were.
Reset the ciruit breaker and the machine seem ok.I just hopeI havn’t damaged the electronic module in a moment of madness.
I will go for a new thermostat.
Many regards

The wiring did not come out very well even after preview !
It should be:

The element had been bashed by the drum when it fractured bending the back plate hole in the process. Molegripped the element hole to be square.
New element in – Finished !!!!October 8, 2008 at 9:59 pm in reply to: Diplomat 8512 Service Manual (for Door Seal Repair ) #264241biggus1

The leak was from two places, one was the tub seal and the other was the heater element seal. I replaced tub seal and that is now cured of leaks. I took out the element and it looked a different shape from the APM8512 picture – almost 30 degrees out of true. I must have bent it big style in my efforts either getting the drum in or out. Ordered a new element tonight as I think that the element may be pushing the seal awkwardly.
Looks like total cost will be around £100 to repair this major fault (with £18 of that my fault for damaging the element).
I would appreciate any thing to watch out for when replacing the element, especially the tightness of the rubber seal and retainer nuts.
Cheers

Thanks everyone.
New inner drum back in. Fired up but there is a slight leak about 40 cm from the front of the machine in the middle.
I have a feeling it may be the tub back seal which I did not replace with a new one.
I did not look to see how it fitted on the backplate/outerdrum when I took it off though so I might be putting it on the wrong way- if anyone has any pointers that would be very useful.
I will take the back panel off and try and do a quick rinse to see where the leak is tonight.
Apart from that I’m almost there. I now have a new tub seal which I will put on anyway.
Oh, and what a tip to put it on its front when working on the drive and tub seal.
Great site and great advice by an old fashioned, unselfish mind set which you don’t see much now days!

Is there a part no for the rubber gasket for the drum assembly?

Thanks again Phidom
I finally got to the root of the problem. The inner drum spider support which is riveted to the drum had fractured in three of the four arms!
I think I have to buy the whole inner drum assembly as the inner drum spindle and support are riveted.
A bit dodgy but I suppose these things happen after 5 years.

Many thanks Phidom.
I took off the seal and found it wasn’t really split. The inner drum is quite loose exposing some rough edged part of the seal.
When I turn the drum it seems ok just lots of play if I move it around from the inside. Removed drive belt and spider and the bearing ‘seemed’ ok but if there are inner bearings then they could be worn.
This sounds like a big job removing the whole assy from the case etc.

Oops – Sorry, I am used to too many US techie forums not kids mending washing machines!
I tried logging in with amended name to no avail so I created a new one. Good job I have more than one email address!
No manual ? mmm, imagine a car being manufactured without one.
How do service engineers know how to go about repairing whitegoods without manuals – a combination of luck, experience, trial and error?
Oh well credit card bashing time .
