ok…apologies for replying to own post but I fixed it and thought id post up the how here in case it helps others.
I took off the top panel/lid by removing the two rear screws and giving the front of the lid a really hard thump from the front towards the rear at about 45 degrees. Finally it came off.
There was then just enough space to reach down to the drum wheel.
The belt is a tight fit so I put the belt around the motor spindle first, then 3/4 around the drum wheel and turned the drum wheel so the belt fed itself up onto the wheel. Just the same technique as fitting a bicycle chain onto the front cog wheels when it has come off.
The machine is now spinning.
