Re: New Bearing on Zanussi WDJ1294

To be fair, when I wrote that I was just guessing at a reason that might explain why my bearings had lasted only a year.

However, I have now dismantled the machine, and the shaft does look awful:

I don’t suppose the centre section matters too much, but that bronze collar is scored, and, I imagine, let water in. The inner bearing was pretty rusty.

    New spider on order…

I did, thanks. It seems to suggest:

    1) Zanussi bearings fail.
    2) Replacing them is hard.
    3) I should expect to replace the spider, too.

Thanks for the info, and thanks for reminding me about the gasket, too.

Sorry to re-open this old thread of mine, but I’m afraid I have to report that the replacement bearings have failed, disappointingly having only lasted a year. Perhaps the shaft was also damaged.

I think this time I’ll do the replacement myself, although, as I’ve seen, it’s a tricky and time-consuming job. (I can’t help thinking that, with better design, it could have been possible to change bearings without having to remove the tub – reminds me of that Fiat where you have to remove the engine for the routine replacement of the timing belt.)

I’ll hop over to the parts forum to check what I need for this particular machine.

Damn these manufacturers for concentrating on gimmicks like spin speed at the expense of basic components like bearings!

Had Tony from One Call round this morning to replace the bearings – how’s about that for fast service – and machine is now running perfectly again, so thanks to all.

For the record, it took about an hour and three-quarters, but at a reasonable price, so I’m happy. Just don’t lend him any sockets! (Sorry Tony!) 🙂

That’s miles away! But it does say CB4, so they must be prepared to travel. I’ll give them a call.

    Cheers Dave!

Re: Zanussi FL1085 bearings not worth repairing?

    Thanks for the info, Goatboy.

Yes, the machine’s given perfect service until now (it’s probably done somewhere around 1000 washes) so it was my feeling too that it was too early to just consign it to the tip.

I stopped using it as soon as free play became evident in the drum, so I’m hoping the damage is limited to the bearings.

Now I just need to find someone who thinks it’s an hour (or even two) job who’s prepared to do it!
