What could be wrong with the heater because it clearly works to some extent because the machine doesn’t just stop and doesn’t show any errors. Is it possible for a faulty heater element not to heat up enough so it heats the water slowly, but still to work?

You’re quite right, I don’t know for certain it’s the element – I think it’s the element and I managed to get hold of one cheaply. If it turns out it’s not the element once I get inside it, I’ll list the element on eBay.
