Probably way too late now but my model (GW611) has an Option Adjustment Mode which, among other things, allows you to change the Auto Water Level. And according to my service manual the information is in the “Use and Care Manual”. Maybe this just needs adjustment. Your husband is probably right in that if the manual levels are okay then maybe this readjustment is all that is needed.
