ParticipantRe: Advice sought on Frost-Free under-counter freezers
My opinion.
Frost-free= compressor, defrost heaters, drain heaters, overheat stats, defrost timer, fan motor, light switch, lamp, noise, less space. No manual defrosting (usually), rarely cleaned, usually filthy with peas under the bottom drawer.
Conventional = compressor, thermostat, light switch, lamp, more space, less noise. Switch off and defrost (and clean) twice a year.
Frost free freezers are a solution for a problem which would not exist if the ‘oh so busy’ generation were not as bloody lazy as they are.

ParticipantRe: Starting up an Appliance repair business
Well, Ive got my van, liveried and looking good.
Ive got my business cards printed.
Leaflets at the printers.
Logo embroidered shirts (got one on as I type)
Website in the process of being made.
Quotes received for public liability insurance.
Business name registered (I think)I will be registering with the ‘find an engineer’ thing.
Had a look at the online form, and it asks for accreditations and trade certificates (something like that anyway)
I will also be registering with the trade association.I have worked in the appliance repair business for over 30years, A contracting electrician before that. Scottish power,Elect servicing and scottish gas.
Except for my c&g electricians certificates, which now look like the dead sea scrolls, I have never had any certificates issued to me for all the training and work I have done.
I renewed my Fgas qualification last year, but BG hold the certificate and wont give it to me. I suppose I could get a hold of a new one of these, but, except for that, I have no proof that I have ever done this job !Seems a strange situation, but Ive never needed to have any proof.
Everyone says, ‘get trade association stickers on your van and paperwork. People look for these’
How do I get them. I’m not sitting any more exams. (exept for my 17th edition asap) I’m getting too old for exams.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

ParticipantRe: Free call outs
The value of the call is not how easy it is to fix.
Its you having the knowledge to know how to ‘fix’ it. This is what you are primarily getting paid for.
Does that make sense??

Ive got to haul it out of its housing ( and you know what that sometimes entails) to do live/dead/live test.Hardly 30 second tests Martin.

ParticipantRe: Beko fridge freeze recall
I work for Scottish Gas. Do not compare us with British Gas please. Up here we are good …ish.
I have now replaced about 100 timers. Not one of them has shown any sign of damage. However Ive found a couple of capacitors which have been burning. ( we also wrap the caps in heavy sticky tinfoil as part of the safety mod.

ParticipantRe: Whats the strangest fault you have come across?
Years ago, called to a GEC storage heater. Charge controller under the lid was faulty. I said to the cust that they were no longer available.
She said “There is a heater in the living room that I dont use. Can you take the part from it and use it in the hall heater”
Being a helpful chap I said yes, and we proceeded to remove piles of cd’s from the lid. Three screws and the lid was off.
There is a gap under the lid about three inches deep and three feet long, and 10 inches wide.
Lots of bundled-up 50s 20s and tenners. About 27 grand. All the rubber bands had perished with age.
She did not know if it belonged to her first dead husband or recently dead boyfriend. We checked dates, but she was a bit ‘upset’.
I suggested a cuppa. When she was making it I thought about sticking a bundle in my pocket ( we had not counted it at this time). I didnt … expecting a reward.
She gave me a tenner !!! Pity she hadnt switched it on and burnt the house down . Tight bitch.den
ParticipantRe: fault code

ParticipantRe: Ariston Oven Door
I would have no problem telling the customer that she could use this oven.
As long as the inner glass was in place, the handle was secure and she was made aware of the temperature which the glass would be.
I suppose nowadays in this stupid litigious country we live in, it would be sensible to get her to sign something, but “extremely dangerous”. I wouldnt go that far.den

Phidom wrote:. I found a small leak, which appears to be the tub joint but I don’t think water has been dripping on anything electrical as it is dripping off a rib on the side onto the plastic base. It looked as though the water might have been coming from a screw hole so I filled that with silicone.
These often leak from the tub joints. Run your hand down the joint. If there is white dust present, it will be leaking.
Sometimes tightening the bolts cures it but not always.den
ParticipantRe: refrigerant handling coursa
Thanks for the replies. Done the course, quite interesting really.
Had to do practical .. recovery, regass, etc. Then answer about 120 questions, which you must get every one of them right. (a little prompting by the questioner was given when stuck with any). And passed !
Now terrified to use r600 after seeing nice explosive videos.den
ParticipantRe: Hotpoint configuration codes
