it was the engineer that diagnosed lack of refrigerant / a leak. At this point I believe the fridge was also not cooling quite right – similar issue again where the fridge sensor read 3 degrees but an internal thermometer showed the temperature was a fair bit warmer.

I remember testing the temperature sensor by placing in either iced or hot water (can’t remember which) and using a multimeter. It tested ok. I found what the multi meter readings should be from a video on YouTube.

I was similar in not wanting to scrap / send the unit to the tip, however at this point like you mentioned it was looking uneconomical to continue repairing. It was a pity as it had a couple hundred spent on it at that point what with a whole new rear internal fridge cover (seal had gone) and replacement water tank.

Believed to be lack of refrigerant or a small leak.
decided to replace as it was >10yrs old and refilling with refrigerant is reasonably expensive and no guarantee it would solve the issue.
I opted for an LG model from Costco (about £1400) and so far it’s been very good.

I’d put off replacing it earlier because of the cost and needing to take the kitchen door off it’s hinges, and the new and old fridge taking the doors off to get it inside the kitchen. It wasn’t so bad in the end though compared to all the hassle the old fridge kept giving me!

No worries Dave, appreciate your help so far. Hoping someone comes to my rescue 🙂

Hi Dave, I’m happy to replace the sensor before calling out a professional again. Presumably you do not mean the defrost sensor located behind the evaporator cover, so where is the temperature sensor located in the freezer compartment ?

An update; Switched off the fridge/freezer for a few days to let everything defrost and found the freezer remains warm after it was powered back on for a day. I checked the freezer fan which is spinning fine, and also went to have a second go at thoroughly cleaning the condensing coils near the compressor.

What should I check next ? or is it a case of replacing for new ?

The freezer after a few hours running displays -22, but an internal thermometer shows +2 inside. The fridge continues to cool OK and is at +4.

Thanks for the reply. We’ll be trying out all of these suggestions and I’ll let you know how it goes.

I should have said there’s no issue cooling the fridge compartment . The sensor, evaporator cover, heating element were all replaced within the last year within the fridge. The issue is with the freezer compartment.

That’s very helpful thank you! I’ll give that a go when we’re on holiday and write back with how things went.

Thank you Dave, I’ll take a look for the sensor in the freezer compartment. Any clues as to where it’s located ?

The preffessional already visited and said a new ice maker was needed and had not spotted the freezer was running warm. Neither had we till the ice cream was soft.

Please can anyone help ? Do I need to replace a temperature sensor inside the freezer compartment perhaps ? I’ve not yet replaced because no fault codes are showing on the front display.

Just a thought, If its the motor bearing and it wears more, is the motor likely to leak water ?

Thanks Dave – it’s also occured to me, maybe just put up with the noise till it packs in – might get days, weeks, months, years. who knows??!

Removed both water rotar arms, and the noise persists the second the wash cycle / water gets pumped. I suspect as you say, it could be the wash motor. Looks relatively straight forward to replace ? only downside is it looks a little on the pricey side.

Update: although ice was forming on the top left corner of the evap corner, this I’m told is normal. There is no longer any ice build up behind the cover so it worked thank you 🙂 I tested the heating element by putting the fridge into RD mode and splashing some warm water over the element which hissed away so that’s fine. Finally I swapped out the sensor in case it was out of range (cheap and easy to do). Pretty certain the issue is solved so thanks.

Fitted the replacement evap cover (ordered from here). There is ice forming again quickly in the same places. I can see a gap either side towards the top of the evap cover of about 10mm, but otherwise it looks to be fitted in place OK.

Are there any other suggestions ? I can see water on the floor from time to time suggesting the defrost cycle and heating element are melting some ice towards the bottom of the refrigeration coil.
