New motor arrived from whitegoods spares within a few days. The replacement motor was quite a bit larger and heavier than the original and the connectors were in a different place. i did have my doubts that it would fit.

I found that I could not fit the replacement without removing the drain filter assembly from the machine. (I could emove and refit the Miele part in situ) The motor was a VERY tight fit and I had to place the filter assembly on the floor and put all of my weight on the motor to get it to locate.

I made up an adaptor cable to connect it and refitted the assembly. Despite the hassle, the result is good, the pump runs quietly, no RCD tripping, a happy wife and £150 + saved compared to fitting a new Miele part.

    Re: Miele W844 Tripping RCD

On removing the old pump (really simple – lift the retaining tab and twist) I found that the problem seems to have been caused by a drip of water onto the winding casing which was badly corroded. A couple of years back I changed the hose that connects the soap tray to the drum and I suspect that there was a leak onto the pump motor before that.

Since the motor is directly below the soap tray and plumbing to the drum I would have thought Miele might have absorbed the cost of a plastic film over the pump to protect it (like e.g Hotpoint and Hoover) – but then again since they are charging 192.00 plus vat for a replacement pump motor, maybe they reckon it’s better business to leave it out.

    (…no. I ain’t that stupid – I’ve ordered one from whitegoods spares)

Some feedback which might be of help to others. I disconnected the heater and tried a test wash – RCD was still tripping. I then disconnected the drain pump and ran a test wash – no tripping. I repeated the tests several times running the wash through to rinse and then emptying the drum manually, before spinning so I’m pretty certain the drain pump is the culprit. I’ll replace the brushes at the same time and try to squeeze another year out of the old dog.

Thanks Whirl4 that’s also my experience. We’ll be replacing the WM next year and guess what – it won’t be another Miele. Even with my O level maths I’ve worked out that I can buy 2 mid range machines for the cost of my Miele plus the £350 spare parts cost I have incurred on my 9yr old machine (and this is with me doing the repairs myself – dread to think what it would have cost to get a Miele engineer in)

Re: Miele – not as good as everyone says.

I agree. Miele may make high quality products BUT… their after sales service is CRAP in my experience and when their products break the costs are generally astronomical. I fell for the ‘best quality’ line when I bought 3 Miele appliances from JL. I had nothing but trouble with the WM – Miele came out and changed the heater element twice but we lived with intermittent problems for 2 years before I decided to investigate myself and concluded that the main circuit board was faulty. I paid a couple of hundred pounds for a replacement and this sorted out the problems. After coughing up another couple of hundred for replacement seals and hoses and now it looks like I might need to spend another wad on a replacement pump / motor, I will likely replace it with a so called ‘lower quality’ model on the basis that I can buy two of these for the price of a new Miele plus repairs.
