A maintenance wash (90 deg wash with powder or tablet) every month, no clothes in it will help to keep machine inner clean and smelling fresh.
Also keeping the machine door ajar when not in use will help.Greg

Jim,
Ken wasn’t being funny but if you come out with something like that alarm bells start ringing ok.
As for the thermostats not touching underside of stainless, this was a big problem with indesit and ariston dishwashers. The face of the stats have to touch the base of the tank or they sense an incorrect temperature.
They would almost certainly make the appliance over heat and trip the thermal device (usually resettable rear right underneath)Unplug before investigating please

On a serious note, I would never go ina house without an adult prescence, it is open to so much inference of inproper conduct.

If its burnt it would suggest a replacement surely. I would not use appliance until that part has been replaced.
