As you advised, I took out the motor and had a look at the brushes. Not being an electronics techy, I just noted that there was very little resisitance to turning the commutator – so I brushed off excess carbon deposits and gave them a few sharp taps.
After re-assembly the motor was back in action – so it was either the brushes or the connections, most likely the brushes as both seemed to give similar audible resistance after the overhaul. I know this is a stop-gap, and I’ll probably have to replace them at the next ‘service’.
As many people have observed, this is an excellent site, and is going a long way to getting full use out of people’s machines instead of falling into the easy dump/replace cycle.
