ParticipantThanks for that- I’ll give it a go next time I’m on a support mission!
Cheers

Just to close loop- apparently yes, the handle does jam this slider which is only used when the machine is in cylinder mode. Turned out a friend of my sister’s has one!
Info may help someone else…….

Hmmmm, not so simple. The SMPSU doesn’t generate a single rail. Its HF transformer has a centre tapped secondary feeding a couple of half wave rectifier circuits with a common +ve at the centre tap. Interesting…….

Thanks for that. They’re 12V relays so I’ll try that.
Fault is odd- plenty of soot in area between SMPS HF TX and main rotary switchmodule but no obviously dead components. Inside switch is all clean. SM IC is on other side of PCB and clean (though probably toast). Made me wonder if a real live bug had got fried and flashed over. Diodes and Rs checked out OK, but no way to check TX for isolation so don’t trust it and no way to replace it.

I would agree that a microwave oven with its 2kV or so magnetron EHT supply is a no go area, touch that accidentally and you’re dead, but a washing machine has nothing worse than mains in it. A microwave oven is a simple machine with few components but with lethal voltage and invisible radiation hazards whereas a washing machine is a relatively complex machine with many interconnected components but with nothing more dangerous than mains voltage and the obvious moving parts hazards.
If the manufacturer’s service manual indeed assumes both technical competence and in depth knowledge of the particular machine and at the same time provides no useful machine specific disassembly and reassembly information (for example whether it is possible to remove a large component like a drum through the back or is it necessary to dismantle in situ) nor interconnection and layout information, then it would be pointless for a layman to have it (though it would be a pretty pointless document, full stop, in that case).

Interesting.
Given the ready availability of other mains powered electrical/electronic equipment manuals and information, not to mention just about anything for that potentially lethal piece of consumer equipment the car, I’ve always thought that witholding information about relatively simple domestic devices has more to do with attempting to protect the livelihoods of those doing the witholding, than any real concern for safety. Poking around equipment with no information has to be more dangerous than doing it with guidance from the manual.
