Thanks for the reply. Yes, there is the sound of an electric circuit engaging for maybe 10 seconds, then it cuts out, then it periodically tries again, while the programme timer runs down.

I just ran a rinse cycle, during which the above occured. The cycle finishes, signalled by the beeps, but no rinse actually takes place.

The timer is a complex multi-function digital display controller for oven temp/programme/timer etc.

I think I’ll look for a replacement oven – this Hotpoint was cheap and I’ve had about 10 years out of it.
