Yes have a think about it and if you feel your`re not up to it (I know that feeling only too well) then I suppose it`ll be Miele again.
Fingers X`d you don`t get anymore trouble with the thing so best of luck because they are apt to start snowballing into a world of hurt if you get unlucky (let`s hope not the thought of giving the likes of Miele – and Bosch and Siemens – anything would make my blood boil) but you do not hear too much about that when they do: folk tend, and I understand why, to be a bit coy on the subject.
I have no idea what this Silikon seal is either but at a guess probably an anti mould or grease / petrol proof but not sure that is just a pure guess I never worked on too many Miele and now I don`t work on anything much-gave up due to Covid = lack of work and retired (one of my better ideas!!).Thanks again for the comments. Appreciated. I’ll feed back further on this in due course.

I would love to be able to buy (and pay a premium price for) a top quality basic Miele machine with absolutely no bells or whistles !!
Yes, me too. If I thought the £799 Miele was similar quality to a £1599 one but with no bells or whistles then I’d buy one. I don’t suppose anyone outside of Miele really knows what corners have been cut to achieve the lower price point machine. There’s really only cost of labour and quality of components to play with.

The plot thickens! Mieles own site has several alternatives and yes one of those is £299.59 (646168) and another is £336.60 (646165) but you cannot order that online but you can order a door seal from them at £62.80 (657942). Someone it seems has told you half the info unless I`m reading it wrong as their website is not the best for clarity. Go type in WDA210 WPM and check yourself and click the box with the tank and gubbins line drawing part 35 = door seal gives you several options as far as I can see. Thanks for that. Correct. The 300 quid one is a “silikon” sealing ring. Don’t know what that is for really. Higher temperature use perhaps? The standard rubber one is indeed £62.80. I will have to think about this now. At one time I would have bought the seal and changed it myself. But I’m not up for that these days.

Just out of interest, as the machine is 18 years old, and the need did arise to replace it, would you recommend another Miele ? I am aware that the “general view” is that the quality of all brands has deteriorated so would be interested to hear your general thoughts on current machines. As in all walks of life, Miele prices go up and quality goes down. I notice Miele have a range of washing machines at significantly lower prices than they used to have. How have they done that? I don’t know, but I’m guessing manufacturing in lower cost countries and using inferior quality components accounts for the lower price points. I also note that Miele warranties are rubbish compared to what they were. My present machine had a ten year parts and labour warranty.
Quandary we have is that, in my opinion, Miele was the only machine you could buy and reasonably expect it to last over ten years with minimal issues. Miele quality has gone down for certain, but so has everyone else’s too. I still don’t see a quality alternative out there. Just buy Miele, avoid the lower price appliances and hope for the best?

ParticipantAnd ….. Just a bit more than 1 year on and the ten year warranty ended in July. (User name changed but it’s the same person posting.)
Anyway, it’s been trouble free after the motor change until recently. I’m unable to stop the door seal from dripping. All cleaned and checked and looks fine but drips to the extent of making a small puddle under the front of the machine during a cycle. On the Miele spare parts website the rubber seal is a gob smacking 300 quid. And that’s without needing to replace any of the door seal fasteners. Booked it in with Miele service for the £289 fixed fee “repair whatever is broken for a fixed fee” call. I’m not sure this machine is going to last anything like as long as the previous Miele washing machine did. At ten years old, I don’t regard it as particularly old for a Miele machine. That’s life I suppose.JoeSoap
ParticipantExcellent. Thanks very much for the support.

just take your time, i dont think there is any wires to disconnect but it never hurts to take it slow
you could always write a letter to miele stating how dissappointed you are tha the same component has failed twice in 3 years. lay it on a bit thick like your mother had noe for years with no problems and you expected more out of the brand
They can only say no even if they discount the part it would be a win

Thanks Dave. That’s reassuring to hear. I’m expecting to see a solenoid or something which triggers the detergent to release. Should be obvious enough once I take a few Torx screws out, I think. Said solenoid probably unhooks off the detergent dispenser. I guess.
Actually, you know, I haven’t bought a white goods appliance in 40 years that hasn’t been Miele. The quality definitely isn’t what it was. (Actually, I lied. I buy Liebherr refrigeration because the similar thing from Miele always costs more!)
Thanks again for your interest. It’s appreciated.

Participantelectrofix wrote: its screwed on from inside the door
how long since miele changed the part ?
Dave
Hazarding a guess, maybe 14 to 16 months ish since Miele changed the part.
I guessed there were screws inside the inner door securing the dispenser from the back. I see there’s a bunch of Torx screws holding the inner to the outer door. Am I likely to cause unintended problems if I carefully remove the Torx screws, pull away the inner door and change the dispenser myself? I’m a competent DIYer, retired engineer. But I have tended to leave this stuff to Miele.
However, if my experience is typical, there’s an issue with these dispensers being overly delicate. Hence I’m thinking of having a go at it myself. Thanks.
