    Thank you for your comments – they inspired me to look a bit furthur.

    I measured the impedance across the wires to the small motor on the back of the timer – it read open circuit (>200k ohm).

    I took the cover off the top of the timer so I could see inside, I then turned the machine on whilst measuring the volts across the small timer motor. I turned the timer knob until I got 240V across the timer motor -but there was no sign of movement from the small cogs at the back of the timer. So looks pretty much like the timer to me.

    It sticks in every position on various wash cycles I have tried, and it doen’t seem to make any attempt to move on.
