Thanks for the advice Dave – I wasn’t sure whether disassembling the valve was possible but as you said, the coil is easily removed by prising it up and then carefully pulling, and the stem then unscrews 🙂
The diaphragms look fine (no splits) but I noticed that the rubber end of the metal plungers have a distinct depression where they’ve sat pressed against the valve opening for years – I suspect this is the cause of the leak. For now I’ve cleaned everything and reassembled (there’s no leak now) but I’m planning to buy a generic valve and see if the plungers are the same size – if so I’ll swap the new ones into the Miele valve (or maybe just swap the rubber ends if that’s a better option).
I’ll post here with a conclusion when I’ve done so!
