Martin, Thanks for the reply, I think we will have to disagree on this.

I could barking up the wrong tree and gone completely mad but I think the following is happening.

1) since the Salt Chamber lever only controls the position/level of a tube in a side chamber next the main chamber. it is reasonable to assume that the what ever the height it possitioned to, the Water level should get to that same height in the chamber. If the lever is set to 3 then the means the chamber is full.

2) the since the water drains out the same way it cames in there must be a 1 way valve that has broken or has got crap in it so it cannot seal and the water from the chamber is draining out of the chamber up to the fill point anyway.

3) since the water level will continue to slowly drop until it gets to the bottom of the salt scoop, then there is a small leak in the salt scoop seal allowing salty water to go directly into the main chamber. Either caused by age of the plastic ( not being soft enough to make a seal) or crap in the seal letting water through.

If the one way valve is inbuilt into the Water Softner then I need to replace the entire water softner. If the Scoop seal can not be fixed then bits for this would also be required. From the part diagram the water softener is £68 and the scoop + nut and seals are about £13.

At this kind of price I am thinking it is not cost effective to repair and I should either use until the hardwater finishes it off or buy a new dishwasher.

I fully appreciate any information given and I would have struggled if Penguin45 had not pointed my in the direction of the Bosh web site for the diagrams.

Perhaps Martin and Penguin could work together and write a few stickys, Explaning in a much detail as possible of how various parts of the dishwasher are meant to work.

Hi unless we are talking about different valves, i really don’t see how it can be the valve. I removed the solernoid from the valve and if I stop the washer in mid cycle, so no water is being added to the washer I see no change in the chamber level(meaning valve is not leaking), If I unseat the valve the level goes down. When ever water is added to the washer it also over fills the chamber. As soon as the water stops it promptly drains backs the way it came in taking massive amounts of salt into the dishwasher. Is there a valve which controls the flow of the water into the chamber. The lever for the salt chamber is set to minium.

Is the same Valve meant to be used to fill the chamber? if so I see the Valve only operating to regenerate. Then this would point to a controller problem?

As it stands at the moment because water is added to the washer on a regular basis the salt chamber is emptied after a single cycle. Leaving all the items inside the disher coated in massive amounts of salt.

I think I am going to give up with trying to fix this dishwasher, if it is the water softerner then its about £70.

I am looking at buying a Bosch SMS50E02. Are there any issues I should know about before buying?

Hi, I don’t think it is the valve. because of the following.

The Chamber fills to a very high level thought the inlet pipe. the Chamber the empties quickly down to the inlet pipe level, with water going back out of the inlet pipe. The chamber the empties slowly until the water level reaches the bottom of the entrance where the salt is inserted. After it gets to this level I see the Inlet pipe slowly empting of all water until the intlet pipe is empty. The Water in the chamber stays constant if I stop the dishwasher. The rest of the chamber does not empty.

At this point the Water level does not change until more water is added to the dishwasher and the process of up and down starts again. 1 enitre scoop of salt was consumed in 1 wash cycle.

I have taken the dishwasher apart and I have taken the valve out and cleaned it. It looks to me as if the chamber is over filling and slowly draining, even though I have removed the solenoid. I have attached 2 pictures to show the water levels the 2nd picture has 2 red lines one for the main chamber and 1 for what i think is the filling tube it looks like it is draining slowly. The softener level is set to the lowest value. The water level gets so high it looks like it also leaking from the salt scoop.
I think it is over filling in the 1st place. I could be wrong. Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks for the info, the diagrams look very good.

Can you possible tell me what the sequence of event are that the dishwasher goes through to add softened water to the dishwasher?

Is it normal to have water about a inch below the salt scoop?

is it easy to open the disher to view the part?
