ParticipantOk, might get a quote from you then :).
So I’ve been comparing functions between the WAN 28281, 28201 and 28108.
The last 2 seem nearly identical in spec (so god knows whey they were £70 different!), so comparing the 28281 to the other 2. Here’s the worthwhile(??) differences :-It has Night wash (I probably wouldn’t use that anyway).
It doesn’t have Varioperfect and thus doesn’t have Eco perfect (but does still have Speed perfect).
60C full load uses 0.92kwh vs 0.94, part load 0.73 vs 0.78, 40C uses 0.63 vs 0.56 🙁
Takes 25 and 10 min longer at 60C full/part load, is 20 mins quicker at 40C part load 🙂 (grrr to no 40C full load stats!).
Is 1-2dBA quieter at washing, 2dBA quieter at spinning.
Doesn’t have Reduced ironing or Duvet programs (does that really matter? Can it be done with other programs?)
Doesn’t have Drum clean program (as above, and isn’t that just a 90C slow spin wash anyway?).
Doesn’t have Aqua plus (does that matter?).
Has a 32cm porthole vs 30cm 🙂
Doesn’t have Active water plus, ‘only’ Active water (again, does that matter really??)The above list isn’t exhaustive (to name one, I didn’t bother mentioning the pre wash function the 28281 has).
The 28201 claims it has extra sound insulation, but the sound figures contradict that.
They all have splittable drums.I’m leaning towards the later 28281, any reason I shouldn’t based on the above? I don’t fully understand all those functions.
PS tried to find info on the earlier mentioned Zanussi, couldn’t find any real reviews on it, the cheap price makes me suspicious and the only expertreviews review of a recent Zanussi (a bigger one) mentioned the drum couldn’t be split.

Just use the compare option, you can compare up to four appliances at the same time.
Don
I tried that, it doesn’t show all the details, and anyway, as I said, it now it only lists the 28281 and not the other 2 :(.
You sell washing machines?Dave
£100 cheaper!? Nice 🙂Markpd
ParticipantAnd just to add to the confusion Bosch has added a new machine, the WAN28281 for £549, and the other 2 have been de-listed from the product list comparisons. Maybe gone out of production?
Anyway, I guess I’m going to have to write down the differences to work out which one I want, the pages for each machine are slightly different which makes comparisons difficult:mad:Markpd
ParticipantYea ok, so no way of knowing then?
As for bearing prices, looking at the parts catalogue for the WAN208108 and WAN28201GB although I see the bearing I don’t see the bearing listed, is it part of the drum 0318? Btw, the former is £147, the latter £106. You said earlier the drum is the same part number, but they aren’t (although the motor is). I wonder what the differences between the drums are?? (aside from £41 :p).
Are the bearings industry regular parts? And if so can we just buy them from bearing shops? If we can, is their anything stopping us removing it and fitting a new one?

ParticipantIIRC the WAN machines use brushless motors (their so called Ecosilence drive), so no brush issues their :).
Good to hear your WAE machines have done well :), both my father and sister have said they’ve had Bosch machines last many years, although I have no idea which models (except my father’s machine was ~15yrs old when they replaced it a few years ago, so an older generation).
Re comparing machines, are their no known general trends with them?
Markpd
ParticipantHi Andy, thanks for your reply, firstly my sincere condolences on your other half’s health.
I don’t know what more I can say…….Re Bosch washing machines, I won’t be buying one with a sealed drum. But you’re right I haven’t looked into parts prices for them. And although I would be repairing the machine myself once it’s out of warrantee (I’m a car mechanic, so hopefully within what I can do!), the cost of spare parts is still a valid point.
As for grease on the seals, I can’t see any manufacturer not doing that otherwise it wouldn’t last 5 washes, let alone hundreds. If you believe otherwise please show your evidence. As for Bosch vs Zanussi, interesting point, but you don’t mention reliability comparisons, the Bosch WAN units are ~50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} more expensive than the Zanussi unit you mention, but if the Bosch units were 50-100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} more reliable then it would be worth it. Not forgetting the hassle of a breakdown.
I have no idea how reliability actually compares between them though, do you? Or anyone else?
Just wondering what made you decide the Zanussi would be the better bet.Markpd
ParticipantWell I’ve mentioned some of them in my op and post 7, I don’t know what some of them mean, or how useful the ones I do are.
Markpd
ParticipantAre the different functions worth having?
Markpd
ParticipantOk, so between those 2 I should just chose the cheapest one.
Not sure if you’ve seen my edit to my previous post, what do you reckon about the 28281GB? (although no price shown for that one).
Markpd
ParticipantRe looking up machine, when you say last one, do you mean the last digits in the number? (which they incrementally increase with newer models or better models?).
Got ya on the parts (didn’t see that you have side scroll the diagram). So is there any meaningful differences between the WAN28108GB and WAN28201GB?
Just found the listing for the WAN28281GB too, that seems a little quieter but is the lightest too, err . It’s missing the economy program for cottons though, but has vario speed and spin/drain for wash optimisation, whatever those are worth? (and uses 16{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} more power at the 40C colour wash).Markpd
ParticipantI Just looked up WAN28108GB and chose the 1st one, didn’t see any listing for drum parts……
Going back to my op, what’s the differences between the 2 different Series 4 mean?
Markpd
ParticipantAh that’s interesting, I thought they were all a sealed drum now, good to know the WAN series aren’t! 🙂 (that’s what you meant right?)
Markpd
ParticipantOk thanks.
Re old account, it didn’t recognise my email address, I only use 1 for everything ( bar Google), so it seems my account has vanished.
