Re: washer drum does not turn – sorted!

Excellent, well no, bummer, but many thanks Penguin45 for the excellent advice – sounds like a down-grade machine is the answer for me.

Thanks again, and to ditto the first post in this thread, advice like this is really valuable to us Joe Publics. If the rest of the machine is worth anything to a local repairer, please go ahead and post in the trade forums as they’re welcome to it. Motor etc. is fine. We are indeed daahn sarf, East London just off the M11, postcode is E11 2HA.

Re: washer drum WILL not turn

I have the same problem, and am trying to make the same decision- repair or replace?

I’ve a Hotpoint WMA37. The drive belt came off yesterday, the machine having been making a gawd awful noise just before. With a lot of huffing and puffing, skinned knuckles and a tyre-iron, I managed to lever it back on, but the belt came straight back off when tested, and whatever state the bearings were in before that they’re shot now! I can barely turn the drum at all… bearing kits are £30-ish, plus someone to fit them (I’m not going near that drive belt again!), I figure best case I’m half way to the cost of a cheap new machine… how likely is it to be just bearings, and am I likely to have done more damage than that in-expertly forcing the drive belt back on?

    Thanks in advance!
