Update: Board had not failed. The wisps of black ‘smoke’ were carbon dust from the motor that were drawn to the electromagnetic coils on the board. Apparently it’s common to mistake this as a symptom of a burn-out 🙂 Plugged board back in, used a diagnostic flow chart to check the pressure switches (chart kindly provided by someone in the business – it’s a right pain that consumers can’t easily get hold of service manuals as the more technically minded of us are pretty proficient with the right information) and confirmed they were okay. Checked all contacts and wiring from the switches and the washer is now working. Still comes up with e41 when in diagnostic mode but everything functions as it should so I’m not concerned at this stage.
So, probably just a loose contact all along. No need for any replacement parts.
Cheers.

Any suggestions about how to go about diagnosing what has caused the board to fail?

Yeah, I had read that page of fault codes (and others) with interest. That’s why I tested out the heating element and pressure switch first. Given the black smoke trails, I’m guessing the board has failed or something else has caused the board to fail. Either way I need the board repaired – it’s just a question of whether there’s another failure in the system somewhere.
I’ve read elsewhere on this forum that QER sometimes provide information about the source of the failure if it’s not the board itself.
Or are you suggesting that the black smoke is not necessarily a sign of failure?

Update: sent board to QER ltd in Cumbria. Found them on google and they’ve been mentioned on this site before. Just under £50 quid. Will let you know how it goes 🙂 Ewan

Hi Peter,
Just removed board and bingo – burnt out. Not sure why I was reluctant to pull it out; I guess I was hoping for simpler fix!
Anyway, not obvious what has burnt out on mine. There are black smoke trails around a few components that seems to emanate from a copper-wound component (my knowledge of microelectronics is sketchy, not sure what it is).
Tried doing an ebay search but didn’t turn up a repair listing. Have you got any further info on this?
Cheers for the tip,
Ewan
