Thanks QUICK FIX & Martin.
Commutator now cleaned up & new brushes checked – definitely in the right way round.
I found this other post on here post318765.html#p318765 which seemed to suggest new brushes can be noisy sometimes until they bed in so we cleaned everything, reassembled it & put it on a fast spin – noisy for a bit then settled down again & sounds almost normal now.
Thank you UK Whitegoods people – this is such a helpful site for those of us who are financially challenged & have to learn a bit of DIY! 😀

Ok, had to buy cheap for short-term, can replace will genuine part later on (few weeks) but in the meantime can we just put up with noise or is it likely to damage the machine? Thanks for all your advice.

Hi, thanks for the reply. The motor wasn’t making this noise before so I’m hoping it’s still sound. Machine is only 3 years old. We have fitted 3rd party brushes rather than Bosch – is that normally a problem? Pretty sure we got the brushes in the same way the old ones came out, we were careful to note the direction & match this up. There was a lot of carbon dust everywhere inside the machine, will take it apart again & clean commutator. When the motor is out of the machine, is it ok to vacuum out the dust with the narrow tube end of the vacuum? Thank you
