iadom: Thanks for your helpful reply 🙂 It is much appreciated!

Despite the slightly dodgy circumstances, I guess it is best for me to give the GIAS engineer the benefit of the doubt this time round- the washing machine is working fine now with some sort of warranty, and so one can’t complain too much! Will definitely be considering a reputable independent next time!

p/s: I did try and get in touch with someone via the repairs@ page on UK Whitegoods a few weeks ago, but alas no one actually got in touch even after a week, and I couldn’t find a direct number to call and contact the recommended local company (via Google/YellowPages and BT’s directory) and say that they were found through UK Whitegoods. Perhaps this detail could be added in the future if possible please?

p/s2: The mains filter didn’t have any split or leak as far as I could tell (from afar) but there was some black around the connections.

Definitely a little bit worried by the Hmmm…. 😯 Does the control board/motor look ok? Is there a better picture that can be taken for further analysis?

Not sure if these pictures are clear enough (I do have more of the motor) but perhaps they will be useful?

    Thanks 🙂

Sorry about the late response! Thanks to everyone for your help. In the end, after poking around the machine abit, we decided to call in the Hoover/Candy engineer

He said that the reason it wasn’t spinning was because the motor had gone, as it didn’t have enough power to start the spin cycle although it was still ok for the washing cycle. He recommended that we get a new machine, but people have mentioned (on this forum) that machines costing upto around £300 won’t last for more than 3 years, we decided to opt for the repair.

We may regret the decision later (not sure when) but the total cost of repair came to £250, including the £95 callout charge, so parts were around 150 (including VAT)

To give a breakdown of what was replaced for th3 £250:
He said that as the motor (apx £100) had gone (he wasn’t really specific, but said something about the armature) it would affect the control board as it was all interconnected, so the resistor (I’m sure that’s what he said) would have burnt out, so he replaced it (around £40 I believe) I’m looked at the control board then and it seemed to look ok (I’m no electronics expert), but he said he could tell by the way the machine was running, so… Anyway, apparently it has updated software to prevent the machine from spinning if the load is unbalanced, so that will help for the future?

He also replaced something called the ‘mains filter’ (around £10?) near the top of the machine. To be fair, some part of this little device had some black on it, which may have been the burn smell? Again, reason being that all interconnected/affected.

I’ve taken some photos of the board and the motor which I’m happy to post for reference. Even looking at them now, I don’t know if it really was the motor that had gone, or the carbon brushes that needed replacing, but the new parts come with a 12 month warranty.

Re: Hoover se220 – not spinning (and now a slight burning sm

A massive thank you to everyone who replied! 🙂 I did find them very helpful, and feel lucky that someone (who knows what they are doing) had exactly the same machine with the same problem right about the same time! 😮 So thanks especially to outofreach for posting back so quickly!

I am quite a newbie with white goods, so if outofreach/anyone does have the time, would it be ok to clarify a few points if possible?

    – lifted the front of the machine up and back about 8 inches

If I’ve understood this correctly, I actually somehow open the front of the machine rather than the back? I should then leave it standing or put it on it’s back?

I switched it to spin and powered up briefly

As you’ve probably noted, I’m even worried about a burning smell; so would it be feasible for me to troubleshoot without actually turning the machine on at this stage?

The bushes look easy to replace but be carefull laying the m/c back because of the drum. they are the black plastic modules at the front but have star drive type screws on, they can be bought of this site for £14.95

Thank you for the link to the Ebay item! The carbon brushes looked very different to how I imagined them to be (I had just googled ‘carbon brushes’ and had a look at the image search results) If/when I do change the carbon brushes (I’m assuming there are about 2 or 4?) do I have to align them in a specific way?

Thanks again all for your help! If I can do this, I shall try and post pictures or something (if allowed) 😀

p/s: It seems if I return to washing at 30/40 degrees, there isn’t a burning smell. Hmm! :rolls:
