Re: Much work in South West area?

Is this just for the South West area (like in the subject) or are we talking generally/nationally?

Hey Mike, why Cornwall for heavens sake?

Old codgers retire there, grockels come down in their camper vans in the summer and block all the narrow roads. Spaced out surfers crash out in Newquay and everyones breath stinks of garlic and fish in Polperro. Not to mention that it rains there 300 days of the year, so it’s not a good choice mate to be honest! 😉

Coupled with the fact that those guys down there that are eeking a living from what little this trade has to offer us, won’t be best pleased at a new boy pinching their meagre agency work! 🙁

But, if you are still set on Cornwall and you’re up for earning a crust whilst you’re there then I know for a fact there’s is a shortage of skilled roofers, tilers and carpet fitters. If you can lay your hand to any of those skills…you’ll do well my son! 8)

    Hi Martin,

For a start, I surf, so can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be!! I’ll also be an old codger one day so it saves me moving in the future!!

The guys down there have nothing to worry about, after all, if there’s enough work for a CDA engineer, they’ll put one there anyway as they prefer to use their own guys than agents… so if it’s gonna happen, then it’s gonna happen, nothin I can do about it!

And I don’t really want to start re-training at this stage. I’m already Corgi and refrigeration so I’m sure that if it’s what I really want, then I’ll be ok.

I can see the angle people are coming from, but if the shoe were on the other foot, you would be asking the same question as me. You’ve wanted to live there for years, the wife says let’s move then, you start doing some research, etc. You can’t tell me most of you haven’t thought about it at some stage in your life/career??

And the fact that it rains so much? When you’re in the sea surfin, a bit more water makes no difference!! And it won’t stop me fixin machines either!! Let’s face it, I’d rather be in Cornwall in the rain than stuck on the M6!!!!!!

Thanks for your replies, but I can see I’m going to meet some opposition and I don’t want to cause any problems, so I’ll leave it there. Whatever will be, will be…

    Regards, Mike.

Re: Much work in South West area?

So it’s a no go then!! I’m trying to get my manager to sort me something down that way, he said he’ll look into it for me, ie. run through the figures and see what he gets. He also said that if he can’t offer me an employed position then he’s willing to give me all the work he currently gives agents down that way, so might be the way forward…

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated, just was hoping for better news than that posted so far!! At least it’s been honest, which is exactly what I wanted.

By the way, are most of you down there self employed then, that’s the impression I get from your posts. Don’t Hotpoint, Miele, Hoover, etc have engineers down there???

    Thanks again,

    Mike.
