Are there outfits that do ‘strip/store/sell’ on parts from white goods that householders are disposing of? What do the councils do with the stuff they come to collect, or that we take to the refuse site?

I looked around for suppliers of recon machines, firstly in the phone book (couldn’t see a single one: anyone know the right heading?) and then literally driving around some of the areas I thought might have them lined up outside. 2nd hand office furniture is relatively easy to find!
I’m happy to fix things up myself given a reasonable chance of success. I probably fix a half-dozen appliance parts a year: remotes that have been dropped enough to need a cracked solder joint wetting; new brushes in the washing machine; broken handles splinted with Araldite; etc.
It’s my personal belief that newer appliances are being build to lower standards, and I’d much rather keep an old but generally reliable appliance in use for this reason and also to avoid the environmental impact of bringing in a whole new appliance for the sake of a small component. The prevailing economics of spare parts doesn’t see to support this approach though!
Whether that’s one I fix myself (and can judge the merits of reparing) or one that an independent repairer has fixed (and offers a warranty on) I’m agnostic on.

I guess it depends where you’re coming from.
I have a 6-year old dishwasher that I could spend £100+ fixing up.
I’m in London, so there are often similarly aged (often a generation or two newer) Bosch items nearby that finish at £65-80 on eBay.
I’m also not sure that it is the control board, so getting a working model is also a lower risk that paying the £100+ only to find it is something else afterall.

ParticipantRe: Bosch SGS5312 not taking on water
Thanks for the help so far.
You mentioned checking the l/h pressure unit + tank. Is this the bit with the diaphram to actuate the ‘higher up’ microswitch? If not can you point me towards the right bit?
How would I check this is working?
And generally, we’re saying there aren’t any other switches that might be stuck or misaligned that the contol unit relies on?
Once agian, really appreciate your help to date.

Hi
I’ve taken out and cleaned the shortish hose in the base to the left hand side, and checked that various microswitches and their actuators seem free to move.
Doot closes fine.
When turned on the machine does normal things like:
– Show a ‘-‘ next to wash
– Has a short pump outBut then it stops, presumably waiting for water.
A ‘Reset’ (buttons 1+3) works normally: shows ‘0’, pumps out, stops.
