    To go back to the original question, as far as the machine goes there is no difference in performance between the standard Dysons and the Animals. The only differences are that the Animals have a HEPA filter (which you only really need if you have allergy sufferers in the household) and the Animal tool. Even the Animal tools aren’t really designed wholey for Animals but they can be very handy for stairs and car footwells. You could always buy one seperately if you want one though.

    I think the Dysons are pretty good. My first still worked a treat when we upgraded it after 5 years of (ab)use! The second (a DC14) is going strong too. I have to agree, Dyson are slick at marketing but that’s not to say that they dion’t make very good vacuum cleaners. They’re pretty loud though.

    Edit: Sorry, I missed your comment about the allergy – so definately go for one with a HEPA filter.
